"I bought this car from the dealer 19 years ago and
after 170000 miles there have been no major repairs.
By using the clutch on downhills it still gets 50mpg
in the summer and 43 in the winter on the highway.
Its still on the original clutch, transmission, and
engine. Changed the oil and filter every every April,
changed the tires whenever they wore down, changed the
tires and brakes similarly. Most expensive change was
the left wheel bearing at 120000 miles because
the change to press fit bearings in cars
meant taking it to a machine shop ($200).
But now a rodent ate the wires to the windshield wipers to
the knub making it difficult to drive on bad weather. The
last wire that rodent bit into was the positive terminal of
the battery. Now I think I'll find a charity to give it to
but I'm sad to give it up."
"Even though my Saturn is over 14 years old, I still get great gas mileage on the highway (32 average, but sometimes 38mpg). I rated the interior/exterior a 7, because the door molding started to pull away at age 10 and I started noticing small tears in the ceiling fabric. The car is very reliable and has only need minor repairs (it really helps to keep the preventative maintenance up)."
Cons: "Its manual. not everyone drives stick shift"

"Great car for a starter or student or someone trying to save money to buy a new car just as i did. This car will give you 30Mpg assured. its a 4cylinder and $30 will fill the tank. Its very reliable and had been regularly manitain (oil change etc) hv all my gas reciepts incase you want to verify the mileage and most of the oil changed and maintenance receipts as well.
GREAT CAR FOR THE RIGHT PERSON....."
"bought this car new for 10,000 in may of 2002 and have driven it for 173,000 miles and the only mechanical problems have been replace brake master cylinder and slave and install a new clutch kit at 173 000 miles..of course, tires, brakes, and oil changes every 3000 miles. It does not burn any oil and starts within 1 second when i turn the key..most economical and worry free car i have ever owned and at age 76 i have owned a lot of them"
"Saturn SL is an excellent value for the money. This car consistently gets 30+ miles to the gallon in the city and at least 43 on the highway using the air conditioner and traveling in the mountains. It averages 46-48 miles per gallon on long highway trips through the mountains. Being a manual transmission allows for down shifting and good speeds up steep grades - even with the 4 cylinder engine."
"My 2000 Saturn SL has been a great car. It has been reliable, easy to drive and overall I believe I have gotten excellent value from owning it. I have owned this car for 17 years. Purchased it used from the original owner."
