2011 Ram 2500 Crew Cab Review

By

Ford and Chevy pulled out their big guns in 2010, effectively matching or besting the latest Ram Heavy Duty pickups. Not to be upstaged, Ram once again moves the bar, this time by introducing a newly-improved Cummins diesel. The new High-Output 6.7-liter diesel engine produces an astonishing 800 pound-feet of torque and enables the Ram 3500 to tow up to 22,700 pounds. As heavy-duty pickups still account for nearly one-third of the growing full-size pickup market, the Ram Heavy Duty should continue to be a major player in Chrysler's recovery effort.

Can't fit a Mac truck in your garage? A Ram 3500 with the Cummins diesel is the next best thing.

You May Not Like This Car If...

Dollar for dollar, the Ram is every bit the equal of its Ford and Chevy counterparts. About the only reason we can think of not to go with the Ram would be due to a personal preference for one brand over another.

What's Significant About This Car?

The 2011 Ram Heavy Duty gains two new trims: Laramie Longhorn and Outdoorsman. A more powerful engine lineup helps move the Ram's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) to 22,000 pounds, while new standard features include a vehicle information center and electronic brake controller (SLT, Outdoorsman, Laramie and Power Wagon.) New options include a navigation radio and a factory spray-in bedliner.

Driving the 2500 Crew Cab

Driving Impressions While we've taken a Ram Power Wagon off-road and even done some towing, the trip that impressed us most was when we did back-to-back comparisons between the 2011 Ram 2500 Crew Cab and its Chevrolet Silverado equivalent. Most agreed the Ram to be visually more attractive, but we were all stunned to discover how it was also head-and-shoulders above the Chevy in the areas of ride comfort, interior quiet and overall refinement. Although the 2500 lacks the new coil-spring rear found in the Ram 1500, the re-tuned suspension and fluid-filled hydro mounts at the rear of the cab do an impressive job of isolating the cabin from the road.

Ride Comfort
If bouncing around the farm in your Daddy's 1972 Dodge formed your opinion about how trucks should behave, you owe it to yourself to experience the smooth, comfortable ride afforded by the 2011 Ram Heavy Duty pickup trucks.

Power Wagon
The 2011 Ram Power Wagon is an off-road beast. It's a Hemi-powered 2500 Crew Cab with electric-locking front and rear differentials, electronic disconnecting sway bar, Bilstein shocks, 32-inch tires, skid plates, 4.56 axle ratio for hill climbing and a 12,000-pound winch.

2011 Ram 2500 Crew Cab Details
Interior

While we applaud Ram's use of higher-grade plastics and handsome trim, the best part of the 2011 Ram Heavy Duty's cabin space is the impressively long list of available features. Depending on the trim, the Ram HD can be equipped with heating elements for the steering wheel and rear seats, heated and ventilated front seats, power-adjustable foot pedals – the list goes on and on. The Ram HD's enormous center console can swallow a large laptop computer and a set of hanging files, while the rest of the cab offers cup holders, storage bins and electrical outlets galore. Mega Cab models feature reclining rear seats, while the Crew Cab models offer dual under-floor storage compartments.

Exterior

The 2011 Ram Heavy Duty is available in three cab styles (Regular, Crew Cab and Mega Cab), two box sizes (6 feet 4 inches and 8 feet) plus single- and dual-rear-wheel configurations. The Ram HD is distinguished from the Ram 1500 by a notably larger grille and taller hood (with stamped louvers) and unique bumpers. When placed next to the next Ford and Chevy heavy duties, we still think the Ram is the most stylish of the three.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Standard feature highlights on a base-priced 2011 Ram Heavy Duty ST include air conditioning, tilt steering, six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, plus front and side-curtain airbags. More basic features include manual windows/locks/mirrors, vinyl seats and black vinyl flooring.

Optional Equipment

The 2011 Ram HD is as tech-savvy as it is tough, with an options list that includes navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity, Sirius Backseat TV (offering Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network) , USB music connectivity, 30-gigabyte hard drive, 10-speaker Surround Sound, backup sensors and a backup camera (for easier trailer hook-ups). The Ram HD also offers an integrated trailer-brake as standard equipment on SLT, Outdoorsman, Laramie and Power Wagon.

Under the Hood

About 90 percent of Ram HD buyers choose the Cummins Turbo Diesel, which is standard on the 3500, is offered with a choice of six-speed automatic or manual transmissions and includes the segment's only standard exhaust brake (we didn't get to properly evaluate the braking and stability advantages of the exhaust brake, but it sounded great). The new High-Output Cummins Turbo Diesel does not require diesel exhaust fluid and, although horsepower remains unchanged, delivers up to 40 more horsepower at cruising speeds than last year's engine. The lineup also comprises two 4x4 transfer cases (a manual unit standard on 4X4 ST and Power Wagon, an electric unit on all others) and four available axle ratios: 3.42, 3.783, 4.10 or 4.56.

5.7-liter Hemi V8
383 horsepower @ 5600 rpm
400 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 (2WD), 13/19 (4WD)

6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel
350 horsepower @ 3000 rpm
800 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1600 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A

Pros: "Very comfortable and easy to drive. Great engine"

Cons: "Read my dislike comments"

"First the dislike portion. When I first bought this truck, It was a dream to me. Drove great, great comfort and plenty of power. Then came the DEF problems around 5000 miles. It spent close to 30 days over a period of a year trying to fix the DEF warning. "This truck will shut off in 150 miles" warning occurred three times, twice while I was more than 150 miles from home. It actually wont shut off but go into what they call limp mode which is 5 MPH. Not convenient when you are out of town. Thankfully, the local dealers in those areas were able to clear the codes after having to leave the truck for an average of 4 hours so I could drive home. This problem has been since cleared up but only after they replaced the DEF tank, pump and catalytic converter. It has had several recalls for the brakes (software), front end, airbag (software) and has had some other minor bugs like software problems causing the stereo and backup cameras to falter. The batteries had to be replaced after one year of service. Expensive proposition after your warranty is over. Mine were still under warranty. I will see what happens in a year. Even though I rotate the tires every 4000 miles myself and keep the TP right, the tires showed significant wear on the outside at 20000 miles. I just had an alignment done if see if that helps. Also be prepared to spend close to $300 every 15000 miles on two fuel filters. The cost of those filters alone are $180 without the labor if using mopar parts. The oil filter for those who change the oil themselves is also a bit tricky. You have to remove the right front tire (if you don't have access to a lift) to get to it. Even then, it took me a few times to figure how to get the filter out without spilling the contents all over the place. A plastic bag and saran wrap work well. The love portion. The engine, the engine, the engine!!! OMG, what a smooth running powerhouse (Cummings) The tranny shifts great also. The interior on my Limited is more comfortable on long rides than anyone could imagine. The stereo rocks also, especially when playing a CD, HD media or HD radio station. The handling is fantastic as well. The ride is perfect. Good sturdy suspension without any of the mush associated with those trucks that ride like cars. This truck is a mile long and does not have such a good turning radius so be prepared to use reverse and the backup camera quite a bit but that is not a complaint, just a hey it comes with the truck type of deal. This is my third diesel truck and hopefully if all the bugs are taken care of, my last for a while. The service department in all of the dealers I visited have been top notch. Chrysler really should be commended for taken good care of their customers. If it weren't for that, I would have traded this truck in. If you are in the market for a used one, I would suggest making sure that it has had any DEF problems fixed. Hopefully RAM has figured out how to solve the DEF problems in the newer trucks but they have been going on since DEF was introduced in 2007 or so. Yeah, I complained a bit in this review but when this truck is running good, it blows the doors off of other trucks in its class."

Pros: "surprises young hooligans at lights!"

Cons: "cops don't like surprises!"

"I bought my truck a 2011 2500 Longhorn longbed in 2012. I rummaged & rooted around the dealers, did my own research; knew more about the ford, chevy, or dodge trucks then the salespeople!!! For what you get in the Dodge, you would pay double if not triple in the other 2 brands. My longhorn had all the available options at that time, except luckily for me it didn't have the over head cab markers, all the bells & whistles! What dodge should have done: (mind you this is a 2011) 1. Mirrors don't have power fold in. 2. Center radio/nav could have a better screen. there were phones out with better clarity. 3. No parking sensors in the front, the other cars hood disappears rather quickly. 4. Back to the mirrors, they should have put a conical shield around that big mother. instead you just hear it howl as you drive above 70 mph. 5. The tv in the back looks like an older "TFT" model, again there are cellphones with better playback!!! 6. I really wanted to buy a long bed megacab, but nooooo; they don't make those. So you have to take it down the road to where they're able to extend the frame rail, & put a 8 ft. bed on your new mega cab. here's the kicker, that down the road shop dodge will still honor the warranty of the vehicle. WHAT? I JUST DON'T SEE ANY REASON TO BUY A SHORT BED TRUCK! 7. Rear cameras should come standard in the bigger trucks. So you can keep an eye on your hitch! 8. When your nav. system requires an update, you have to go to the vendor, not dodge?! Why, why; doesn't the service dept. not have it & update it as req. 9. Put a 50 gal tank in there already! if not 2, one also fits in the other side."

Pros: "a pleasure to drive, when towing and when not,"

Cons: "Makes me grin way to much when I climb in."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Purchased this truck new, 18 months ago, it has been nothing but a pleasure to drive. Absolutely no problems, This truck was purchased primarily to tow a travel trailer. Because it is so pleasant to drive I have been using it as my commuting vehicle, about 40 miles total each day. Fuel mileage has averaged 20.2 mpg using B-20 Diesel, and about 22 on #2 diesel. This is amazing, considering it is a 8000lb truck, towing a travel trailer mileage goes down to 13.4, but there is plenty of power and maintains the speed limit up the steepest highways, easily. Preferred the nice ride of the 2500 over the 3500, but the lower load capacity of the 2500 makes me load it close to its max. As it is only loaded this way a few times a year, I am really get to enjoy the nice ride of the 2500, where the 3500 would be parked."

Pros: "Smooth ride, unmatched interior and uconnect!"

Cons: "Havent found any yet!"

"I had been looking for a diesel for a while. I finally decided it was time. I did my research and ended up deciding on the 2015 cummins 6.7 mega cab Longhorn Laramie. When I went to the dealer I was decided on a basic 2015 mega cab. Of course being November many of the 2015 were gone. They showed me the last 2015 Longhorn Laramie and I fell in love. I drove it and I could not believe how smooth it rode compared to my 2007 1500 hemi. After looking at Ford's. Which are just simple compared to the Ram...comparing apples to apples. And looking at chevy with there crazy amount of recalls and far more expensive than the ford and ram. I decided on the following... The reliability of the Cummins. I know the ford 250 and the Chevy 2500 have more horse power but ram has the reliable cummins, better interior, unmatched uconnect features, the mega cab is a must, so comfortable....best bang for the buck. The cummins diesel engines are on commercial vehicles and are proven to last. Also they have less moving parts so they last longer. Lastly they interior and convenience features do not compare to the ford or chevy. To top it off the dealer knocked off 9k off MSRP. Also fuel economy without a load is over 20mpgs on highway. Couldn't be happier."
