2007 Nissan Titan King Cab Review

By

Nissan's full-size half-ton pickup is a force to be reckoned with, especially if you're one of the big three domestic pickup manufacturers. Available in King Cab and Crew Cab configurations, the Titan is loaded with useful features, such as the King Cab's rear-hinged half doors that swing open almost 180 degrees and an infinitely-adjustable track system built into the bed. With a tow rating of 9,500 pounds and a 1,500-pound payload rating, there is not much the Titan can't handle. The Titan features a rugged body, stiff chassis, powerful engine, a modern interior and a very appealing assortment of innovative features.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a big, powerful truck that's out of the mainstream in both style and features, has a really nice interior, a stump-pulling V8 engine and a host of innovations designed around real pickup-truck functions, take a look at the Titan.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you like the more conservatively-styled trucks from Chevrolet and Ford, the Titan may be too flashy for your taste. And the option list does not include dual rear wheels, or the choice of a six-cylinder or diesel engine.

What's Significant About This Car?

No major changes for 2007.

Driving the Titan King Cab

Driving Impressions We found the Titan's V8 engine felt strong at all speeds, with loads of power on demand. The five-speed automatic transmission shifted smoothly and the gated shifter made it easy...

to move between first and second gears whenever we needed to apply engine braking. You may notice that some vibration gets telegraphed through the steering wheel, and that there is a noticeable exhaust note upon application of the throttle.

Still, the Titan delivers a smooth, controlled ride and exhibits better-than-average steering and handling response. Another noteworthy feature is the Titan's optional locking rear differential, a first for this segment.
Favorite Features

Wide-Swinging Rear Door
The hinged rear door on the King Cab model swings back 168 degrees to create exceptionally convenient interior access.

Exterior Storage Box
The Titan's exterior storage box (located behind the left rear wheel) is perfect for storing such items as jumper cables or muddy clothing.

Interior

The Titan's interior is bold and forward-thinking in its design. On certain models you can opt for a center console with a gated shifter (the shift lever moves through a slotted path) for better control when shifting gears. The seating is comfortable, though drivers over six feet may find themselves staring out through the windshield's tint band. Some drivers also felt the seat bottoms could do with a sharper upward angle to better support their thighs, so you may want to check this for yourself. You'll find the Titan's instrumentation to be clear, legible and easy to see, except for the digital odometer that all but disappears when viewed through polarized lenses.

Exterior

Nissan offers the Titan in two body styles: King Cab and Crew Cab. An optional spray-in bedliner applied at the factory covers the entire cargo bed floor and walls. The Titan cargo bed also features a built-in channel system with moveable cleats designed to provide multiple tie-down points. Outside the bed, Nissan has placed a clever storage bin just behind left the rear wheel. The Titan's ground clearance is among the best in its class, with over 10 inches measured at the rear axle. King Cab models feature a clever rear door that can swing a full 168 degrees to aid with loading.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The Titan King Cab has a 317-horsepower 5.6-liter V8, five-speed automatic transmission with a Tow/Haul mode, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), air conditioning, full gauges, exterior cargo light, dual manual side mirrors, a rear 12-volt outlet, AM/FM stereo with CD, fuel tank skid plate, cruise control, tilt wheel, tire pressure monitor and 17-inch steel wheels. The SE and LE add even more standard features including power locks, power windows, remote keyless entry, dual heated power mirrors, a sliding rear window and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Optional Equipment

Options vary by trim and include four-wheel drive, front side and head-curtain airbags (covering the front and rear seats), off-road package, tow package, Rockford Fosgate audio, spray-in bedliner, eight-way power driver's seat, heated leather seats, rear-seat DVD entertainment system (on the Crew Cab), navigation, a locking rear differential, bed extender and a garage door opener.

Under the Hood

Unlike many of its competitors, the Titan offers only one engine choice, and it's the most powerful V8 Nissan builds. The 5.6-liter V8 produces an abundance of power, but it cannot reasonably be expected to deliver the best fuel economy.

5.6-liter V8
317 horsepower @ 5200 rpm
385 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3400 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/19 (2WD, Gas), 10/13 (2WD, E85), 13/18 (4WD, Gas), 14/18 (4WD, FFV Gas), 10/13 (4WD, FFV E85)

Pros: "Great ride , Towing easy with powerful engine"

Cons: "gas mileage 10-12 city, 16 hgy"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"It rides better than may trucks on highway. I love the seating up front with captians chairs and the rear sliding window in rear.Towed my 29 foot RV trailer with ease and has no lack of power. I have been orginal owner and have had only brake issues since I wasn't driving it enough. I had to replace rotors due to rusting. Friends that have other truck brands have complimented the Titan on how well it rides on the highway. Excellent seating and room for four large adults both front and rear. I have had zero issues other than brakes."

Cons: "horrible on bad roads or off road."

"This is perhaps the worst truck I have ever owned. Has needed more service than any other truck I have ever had. The 4 wheel drive system is almost worthless. It only has a 3.36 rear end and low range is 2:1 instead of the typical 2.7:1. This truck is horrible on bad roads and worthless if you go where the pavement ends. I have owned several other trucks that never got stuck going to the places this truck got stuck."

Pros: "Safe Safe Safe vehicle. PULLS like a dream."

Cons: "Better left side arm rest for driver."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Cried today as my truck was totaled. Icey roads caused a driver of a ford explorer to lose control, cross the centerline and destroyed the drivers side of my truck, tore the axel of the rear of the truck, and sheared the drive shaft off. Hard hit. Deputy said had I been in a car, I would not have walked away from this one. His actual words were 'buy another one, just like this one.' This truck took a hard hit, air bags deployed, and most likely could have saved my life. I highly recommend this truck, and she pulled like a dream (2 horse trailer) handled like a dream. Some good times in this truck, and am missing her sorely."
