2009 Nissan Titan Crew Cab Review

By

The 2009 Nissan Titan full-size pickup is a worthy competitor to long-established rivals from Dodge, Chevrolet and Ford. Although the Titan is available only as a half-ton model, its powerful engine, numerous configurations and lengthy list of clever features should appeal to most light-duty pickup owners. Designed for the urban pickup owner, the Titan is as adept at carrying bikes, kayaks and ski gear as it is hauling plywood, concrete and dirt. Introduced last year, the PRO-4X model suits the needs of serious off-road adventurers, while the long wheelbase model and E85 flex fuel capable V8 helps expand the Titan's appeal.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a big, powerful truck that's out of the mainstream in both style and features, has a really nice interior, a stump-pulling V8 engine and a host of innovations designed around real pickup-truck functions, take a look at the 2009 Nissan Titan.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you like the more conservatively-styled trucks from Chevrolet and Ford, the Titan may be too flashy for your taste. And the option list does not include dual rear wheels or the choice of a six-cylinder or diesel engine.

What's New for 2009

Changes for 2009 are limited to some new option packages, a matte-black grille and front bumper on the XE trim and the addition of an auto-door locking feature.

Driving the Titan Crew Cab

Driving Impressions We found the Titan's V8 engine felt strong at all speeds, with loads of power on demand. The five-speed automatic transmission shifted smoothly and the gated shifter made it easy...

to move between first and second gears whenever we needed to apply engine braking. There is some vibration telegraphed through the steering wheel, and there is a noticeable exhaust note upon application of the throttle. Still, the Titan delivers a smooth, controlled ride and exhibits better-than-average steering and handling response.

Wide-Swinging Rear Door
The hinged rear door on the King Cab model swings back 168 degrees to create exceptionally convenient interior access.

Exterior Storage Box
The Titan's exterior storage box (located behind the left rear wheel) is perfect for storing such items as jumper cables or muddy clothing.

The Titan's interior is bold and forward-thinking in its design. On certain models you can opt for a center console with a gated shifter (the shift lever moves through a slotted path) for better control when shifting gears. Seating is offered in bench or Captain's Chair style buckets and offers good support and long term comfort. Drivers over six feet, however, may find themselves staring out through the windshield's tint band. Some drivers also felt the seat bottoms could do with a sharper upward angle to better support their thighs. You'll find the Titan's instrumentation to be clear, legible and easy to view, but the placement of the power window buttons atop the door's edge makes them vulnerable to outside elements when the windows are down.

Exterior

Nissan offers the Titan in two body styles, King Cab and Crew Cab, with two wheelbases and four bed lengths. An optional spray-in bedliner applied at the factory helps protect the entire cargo bed floor and walls, while the available built-in channel system with moveable cleats is designed to provide multiple tie-down points. Outside the bed, Nissan has placed a clever lockable storage bin just behind left the rear wheel, and on King Cab models the rear door can swing open a full 168 degrees to aid with loading. Off-road enthusiast will appreciate the PRO-4X's ground clearance, which is among the best in its class with over 10 inches measured at the rear axle.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The Titan XE has a 317-horsepower 5.6-liter V8, five-speed automatic transmission with a Tow/Haul mode, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), air conditioning, full gauges, exterior cargo light, dual manual side mirrors, full bench seat, a rear 12-volt outlet, AM/FM stereo with CD, fuel tank skid plate, cruise control, tilt wheel, tire pressure monitor and 18-inch steel wheels. The XE Crew Cab, SE, LE and PRO-4X add even more standard features including power locks, power windows, remote keyless entry, dual heated power mirrors, a sliding rear window and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Optional Equipment

Options vary by trim and include four-wheel drive, front side and head-curtain airbags (covering the front and rear seats), tow package, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System, Rockford Fosgate audio, spray-in bedliner, eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, rear-seat DVD entertainment system (on the Crew Cab), navigation, a limited-slip rear differential, bed extender and a Homelink Universal Transceiver.

Under the Hood

Unlike many of its competitors, the Titan offers only one engine choice, and it's the most powerful V8 Nissan builds. The 5.6-liter V8 produces an abundance of power, but it cannot reasonably be expected to deliver the best fuel economy.

5.6-liter V8
317 horsepower @ 5200 rpm
385 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3400 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 13/17 (2WD, gasoline), 13/18 (4WD, gasoline), 9/13 (2WD, E85), 9/13 (4WD, E85)

"This was a GREAT truck for the 1st 30,000 miles. Since then nothing but unreliability. I bought the truck new and drove it some, but not a lot. Warranty stopped after 3 years. At 5 years and 30K miles I was driving on a 50 mile trip and the motor started losing power and then stopped. I rolled into a gas station and put in 5 gal of gas. Truck started and ran fine. On my way back home it started losing power AGAIN. Pulled off road, shut off engine, waited 10 secs, restarted and it ran fine. Did this one more time going home. NEVER GOT ANY ERROR CODES. Took truck to dealer (110 miles away) for 2 minor recalls. Dealer had truck for 1 week, found nothing. When I picked it up the service manager suggested changing IPDM. A couple of weeks later I had another engine power loss. I bought a new IPDM from dealer, installed it and problem appeared to be fixed. This all happened in 2011 at 31,000 miles. Now in 2015 and 35,000 miles the problem has started AGAIN. I put in an ECM relay but it did not fix problem. I put in YET ANOTHER IPDM, problem occurred in 40 miles on a trip. Here's the kicker, I can pull over, turn off the engine, restart and have full power (for awhile). Now I had 2 error codes that pointed to the fuel pump and the MAF sensor. I replaced the fuel pump and cleaned the MAF. I then drove the truck on a 120 (240 round) trip. The truck ran fine (FIXED - NO). A month later I made the same trip and the motor quit dead (didn't lose power as before) but just quit at 80 MPH. Pulled over, turned off, restarted and had full power AGAIN. 30 miles (at 80 MPH) motor just quit again. I was in Grand Junction so I took it to the NISSAN dealer there, they checked it over (for free) and found nothing wrong. I then drove it back home and it quit DEAD 2 miles from my home. Turned off, restarted, and drove on home. A month later I took it up in the mountains and stopped on a narrow road to talk with some people. Left it idling for about 10 minutes, motor went into LIMP mode. Turned off, had to wait 20 minutes before it would run again, then it ran fine. This problem had happened 3 years earlier but I dismissed it to vapor lock because it was over 100 and I had left truck idling with AC on. Anyway, I finished my mountain trip with no further problems, even on the 50 mile trip home. Called dealer next day and they said that the most recent problem was cause by the EMC relay. Mine had less than 500 miles on it. I don't mind having to make repairs to a car or truck. BUT, when the dealer has no idea whats wrong and the truck has no less than 8 computers running the truck you would thing that the computers could tell you something useful - NOT NISSAN. Great truck if you don't travel more than 50 miles!"

"Purchased new. At the time it was the only 1/2ton truck that offered a crew cab with a long bed (7'3"). With the exception of a couple of minor electrical issues and needing a new battery, seven years later the truck is still running flawlessly."

Pros: "Very unique 1/2 ton truck with great power."

Cons: "Not fuel efficient as more recent 1/2 ton trucks."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I bought this 4X4 truck to tow a 6500lb travel trailer. It has been perfect in all weather and road conditions. The engine provides great power when towing and fun acceleration when driving solo. The ride is smooth and the interior is very comfortable...dual climate controls, nav system, sat radio, great sound system all at a reasonably low price. Because it has a short wheel base, it is very maneuverable in city traffic and parking garages where crew cab F250's drive like land barges."

Pros: "Value, low cost of ownershio"

Cons: "Cheap rusted screws"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"172k miles with very little maintenance issues. Changed rotors, serpentine belt, tires, part of the exhaust rusted, bolts holding the skid plate rusted. That's it. Had an issue with the fan as a chip went bad. Bought it online and replaced myself. Also, back right speaker went out shutting the stereo down. Overall, I cannot complain. I put a lot of highway miles but I use it as a truck, not a vehicle that just happens to be a truck. Rarely wash it, haul firewood, dirt, stones, pull a landscape trailer. Goes through snow and at times I used 4wd low to get out of 2' of snow. Nissan hasn't changed the look except for the back window. Doubt I will buy another but I will keep this until it dies."
