The 2014 Nissan NV200 may be the smallest member of Nissan's expanding commercial lineup, but it's big on versatility, utility and capability. Pitted against the Ford Transit Connect, the little NV200 stacks up well in the areas of cargo room, drivability and upgrades. The NV200 is priced lower than the Transit Connect, and it gets better fuel economy, at least in town. And, while it can't compete with a full-size van, the NV200 can swallow far more than a compact crossover SUV. A tall roof, squared-edged cargo openings and low floor allow easy loading, while the roomy cockpit is loaded with clever features for storing workplace items, and even features a fold-flat passenger seat that can double as a desk.

If you're using a small pickup or converted minivan to shuttle your goods to and fro, the 2014 Nissan NV200 compact cargo van offers a better, safer and dryer way to do it. Its small size, configurable cargo area and fuel-efficient engine make it ideal for big city delivery services.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The NV200 isn't as high-tech as some larger competitors, lacking workplace solutions such as an in-dash computer, a Wi-Fi hub or fleet telematics. Additionally, the new Ford Transit Connect offers much better highway fuel economy and a slightly larger cargo bay.

Driving Impressions Because it employs the same unibody construction as Nissan's small cars, the NV200 rides and drives very much like a compact SUV rather than a top-heavy van. Aided by its...

... electric-assisted power steering, the NV200's extremely tight 36.7-foot turning radius allows it to execute U-turns in the narrowest of confines. The NV200's tall, narrow body allows it to fit into parking spots overlooked by larger vans, and the huge windshield provides excellent forward visibility. We found the ride taut and the handling quite nimble. Nissan's 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is no powerhouse, but the CVT (continuously variable automatic transmission) makes the most of the little engine's 131 horsepower, allowing it to scoot through intersections and merge with traffic without drama. Load the NV200 with cargo, however, and acceleration becomes noticeably sluggish. Nissan claims and the EPA estimated 25 mpg on the highway, but we saw figures closer to 27.1 mpg while averaging close to 65 mph.

INTEGRATED CARGO MOUNTING POINTS
Nissan makes it easy to install shelving, racks or partitions thanks to the numerous (20 in all) reinforced mounting points strategically placed throughout the NV200's cargo area. No need to drill or weld parts into place, just get some sheet-metal screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver and you're in business.

60/40 SPLIT REAR CARGO DOORS
The 60/40-split rear doors are more useful than a 50/50 setup. When open, the design provides a larger opening curbside while creating a smaller driver's side door less likely to get dinged by passing traffic.

The NV200's interior is built for functionality, not fashion. Nifty storage options abound, including a clipboard holder in the upper dash, a small drawer beneath the passenger seat and a center console equipped to handle a laptop and hanging file folders. In terms of cargo capacity, the NV200 offers a palatable 122.7 cubic feet of space, with a maximum payload of 1,500 pounds. The Ford Transit Connect offers 130.7 cubic feet of cargo room and a 1,710-pound payload, while the V6-powered Ram C/V Tradesman ups those numbers to 155.5 and 1,800, respectively.

Given the target market, the NV200's styling – or lack thereof – shouldn't be a cause for concern. Accessibility comes in the form of minivan-like dual sliding side doors and 60/40 split rear French doors that open 180 degrees. At just over 21 inches, the cargo load floor is about two inches lower than that of the Transit Connect, and undercuts the Ram C/V Tradesman by over three inches. Unlike the Transit Connect, however, the NV200 does not offer pre-cut templates for custom graphics or a choice of wheelbase lengths.

The 2014 Nissan NV200 is available in two trim levels: S and SV. Base "S" models include air conditioning, a cargo bay floor protector, 15-inch steel wheels, manually-adjustable front seats with vinyl wear patches to guard against excessive wear on the upholstery, and a 2-speaker audio system with an auxiliary input for portable music players. Stepping up to the SV model lands you cruise control, remote keyless entry, and two 12V DC power outlets. Safety equipment on all NV200s consists of traction and stability control, six airbags, and a slide-away brake pedal assembly that moves the brake pedal away from the driver in certain frontal impacts to help reduce lower leg injuries.

Optional Equipment

For reasons of safety, we strongly recommend opting for the Rear Door Glass Package. If your tastes run more towards in-vehicle connectivity, the Technology Package includes a navigation system with a 5.8-inch display, Bluetooth, a backup camera, Pandora radio compatibility, and Google Send to Car, which allows the transfer of an address or business listing to the vehicle from virtually anywhere. Finally, an Exterior Appearance Package is also available for SV grades, which adds wheel covers and body-color bumpers, mirrors, and door handles.

The 2014 Nissan NV200 makes do with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 131 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. A gearless continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) sends that power to the front wheels. This thrifty powertrain combination nets the NV200 a 24 mpg combined rating from the EPA. The 2014 Nissan NV200 runs on regular unleaded gasoline.

"I was in the market for a utility vehicle and the compact work van segment caught my eye. I wanted something efficient, easy to drive, inexpensive, and had high cargo capacity. I looked at both the Transit Connect and NV200, ended up getting the NV200 due to it's warranty. I've driven this vehicle for almost 2 weeks now and have put on 200 miles. I'll update this once I get more miles put on it. Overall I like the vehicle as a tool and nothing more. It gets the job done and it's very versatile. I've owned full sized pickups and vans before and all of those were just too big for me. I haul stuff every once in a while so it's not just for me to buy a giant vehicle that has to sit outside and rarely driven because it's hard to park/drinks alot of gas/doesn't fit my garage. The NV200 is the perfect car for someone who wants cargo capacity without having to give up the perks of owning a compact car. The only things I wish Nissan would update on this vehicle are: -bigger wheels. Factory wheels are these skinny 185 tires(smaller than a Prius). Replacement tire options don't exist. You can get other 185 tires but none will have the same load rating as the factory ones. Also the tiny tires probably lead to more effect of highway cross winds and less cornering stability. -Quality Control. I don't know if maybe this is just my specific vehicle but now I really wish I dished out a bit more for a Transit Connect or Tacoma pickup. Let me say first that even though this is a base model van, at least roll out something that is worth buying. It wasn't until after I started driving and sitting in the vehicle a lot til I noticed how cheaply the NV200 is put together. Ok, it's manufactured, it's only a 20k vehicle, but I've had sub 20k Toyotas with better quality control than this. I previously owned a 2010 Chevy Express that was better than this too, it was also a base model. Many of the weather strips on my NV200 are warped, they don't leak but look ugly. There is factory paint over spray on the dash board. Alot of the gap sealant(stuff that is put over where 2 body panels meet) are poorly put on. -Seats. They are ok to sit in but I really wish there was more thigh support. I also wished if both driver and passenger seats had center arm rests. Sitting in the passenger seat feels like you're gonna fall off every time the van makes a turn. -Side mirrors. The mirror isn't adjustable, so you have move to check them. The mirror is ok but the convex mirrors small and almost useless. -A pillars are thick and get into the way when turning. The front quarter window is useless because their tiny too. Other than that I have to warn that the engine is weak, and having a CVT doesn't help either. I have issues getting up to highway speeds unless the pedal is down to the ground(trying to stay under 4k rpm since it's a new engine). Nissan doesn't provide a break in period for these vans but it doesn't hurt to drive it lightly for the first 1000 miles. Steering system takes a little time to get used to because it varies by speed. At low speeds it's very loose and easy to steer, but once you get up to speed it's sharp."

"I have a 2013. I noticed that as I got close to 25,000 miles on the tires, I had to change the tires right away. All 4 tires had worn down. The next problem is that there is only 1 tire maker for this van. For me to get the proper size and weight, it took 2 online companies and 2 Nissan dealers to find the right tires. It almost took a month to get the correct ones that could handle the weight load. One dealer was just going to just put on any old tires, the second one did the proper research and ordered the correct ones. Other then that, and windy days of getting bounced around on the highway, I love the van."

"Having always driven an Astro cargo van, i had my eye on the transit connect for some time, but never really liked it. When the NV 200 came out it seemed to be a better fit for me.-We can argue specs on which is a better van but it really is just personal preference and specific application. Biggest selling points for me were MPG, price and the 60/40 rear door-and interior just "felt better". On the minus side, the sunshades are awkward. they don't extend far enough on the side window and they hang down to much to see through the front window. they don't stay up, had them replaced and the replacements do the same thing. Another downside is its not fun to drive at high speeds when its windy. it gets a bit squirmy. (when its unloaded at least) The cargo area being unfinished (no insulation or coverings) can make the van noisy when it rains. (think tin can) Its an economy van, so power and performance is not going to be one of its strong points-i feel its adequate considering i average 24-25mpg. with lowest mileage recorded at 22.9 and highest at 28.1. Just like any truck, when loaded, there is a decrease in acceleration power and braking distance increases...you just have to drive more carefully. 80% of my driving is little or no load so its fine for my purposes, but if i were to max out the carrying capacity on a regular basis, i may look for a bigger van. The CVT transmission is a bit different from the standard automatic and may take getting used to. Yes there are pros and cons from a technical perspective, but again it comes down to personal preference. Its less "sporty" feeling,(remember its a cargo van) but seems a bit smoother not changing gears all the time. I am neutral on recommending this van. I don't dislike it, but i just recommend if in the market for a cargo van to do your research and get the van that you feel the most comfortable with."
