"I had a real dilemma. I wanted to get a new compact truck with real off-road capability. The most popular Tacoma and the Frontier were essentially 10 year old designs. With the new GM twins (Colorado/Canyon) just out, and with a new Tacoma on the horizon, should I wait and see or find a good deal now?
1. The twins are admittedly more modern and luxurious, but BIG for a compact truck. Nice vehicles, but too close to a full size for my taste.
2. The current Tacoma lacks leather and a sunroof, both high on my list of priorities. Though very off-road capable, on the highway it paled in comparison to the Frontier. The 2016 Tacoma will cost nearly 20% more than the Frontier, and you can be sure they won't be offering many deals, Tacomas have always commanded top dollar.
3. The Frontier, though a 10 year old design, has a proven 4.0L and all the right pieces for off-road use. Though not "quite" as off-road capable as the Tacoma, the power, torque, and vastly superior on-road ride put this at the top of the list. Not to mention it provided the most features for the lowest price.
Having owned a 2005 Xterra Off-Road SUV, I was well area of the Frontier's capabilities and limitations. The newer trucks aren't subject to the well documented problem of coolant getting into the transmission case, so that's a non-issue. The 4.0L is a strong engine, though granted it lacks some of the fuel saving technology that's so prevalent today. Still I manage 18-19 MPG on daily commutes through stop and go L.A. traffic.
The '15 Frontier Pro-4X comes with leather, nav, sunroof, heated seats and mirrors, backup camera, backup radar sensors, and one of the best truck bed cargo management systems out there period. The Rockford Fosgate sound system is one of the best I've ever heard. It's smooth and quiet on the road, and surefooted and nimble when you play in the dirt.
It's a great truck by any measure. Could it be a bit more modern? Sure. But it's a real honest truck that isn't trying to be anything else and I like that."
