With a camp in central Maine, the 4Runner takes the pavement, the dirt roads, the snow, and the mud in the same manner...firmly and with confidence. At 6'4", I miss my Volvo XC seat and unobstructed rear views, But, this truck is far more capable and reliable. A solid highway performer and extremely stabile on curves that one sometimes forgets that it is a truck. I have averaged 26 mpg highway, 22 mpg city, which was very close to my Volvo XC with AWD. Faults: Sport 4x4 styling is a bit over the top...why have a wind scoop if it doesn't work? I'm also not the only person in New England with a rusting towing system. Yet these are minor issues: I became best friends with my Volvo repair person...I am not sure I'll get to know my Toyota repair person

The Toyota 4runner is almost the only 4x4 SUV left on the market that still has a true 4wd transfer case, not computer controled AWD system. Never had any maintenance issues from this 4runner. Best riding & most comfortable 4x4 SUV on the market as well.

We have owned this vehicle since new and to be honest, it has been a bit of a disappointment. Our 95 Suburban that we traded in on it got better gas mileage, despite being bigger and having a larger engine. We have had issues with the driveshaft and catalytic converter. If you own the Lexus version of the 4runner, these were fixed and covered by Toyota. If you own the 4runner, you are on your own. So we had to cough up for a new driveshaft and catalytic converter. You don't need to take my word for it. Just Google 4runner with either of those terms. I even brought in the information along with the part #'s to the dealer in an attempt to state my case. Dealer acknowledged it, but said there isn't anything they could do. We also had to have the A/C fixed at 80k for $1,500. Just not what I expected when I switched to Toyota because of their reliability reputation. Overall the truck has been OK. It rides great, the fit and finish is excellent, and the performance of the V8 makes it very sporty. All in in all I'd give it a C, but this one will get traded off on a GMC Denali when it hits 100k.
