Sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same. Although all-new for 2016, the Lexus RX 450h continues on for the fifth consecutive year as our best resale value winner in the Hybrid SUV/Crossover category. Available in front- or all-wheel drive versions and offering sleeker styling, an enhanced feature set, more power and improved handling, the RX 450h just keeps getting better.
Like its conventionally powered siblings, the new RX 450h boasts an even bolder exterior treatment highlighted by the latest take on the automaker's spindle grille, blackout C-pillars and more dramatically styled lighting treatments. The elevated sense of style in its recast 5-passenger cabin matches a selection of new comfort/convenience touches with even more space for people and cargo. Existing primo extras like Mark Levinson premium audio and a Heads-Up Display are joined by a new Touch-Free Power Rear Door option and the AWD version can be fitted with an F Sport package.
The Lexus Hybrid Drive system in the new RX 450h also has been comprehensively upgraded. Its revised 3.5-liter direct-injected V6 and one (front-drive) or two (AWD) electric motors now produce 308 total horsepower -- compared to 295 in the RX 350 -- with the former earning a 30-mpg combined EPA rating and the latter netting a 29-mpg overall stat.
Set to carry on as the best-selling Lexus hybrid model, the 2016 RX 450h opens at $53,175 with AWD bumping that figure by $1,400. Given its impeccable track record for matching a great driving experience with superb resale value, either one promises to be a smart choice.
