"In July of 2005 I purchased my 2004 Mitsubishi Montero from a dealership that had used it as a demo. It had about 5,500 miles on it and I bought it because after looking for months at dozens of vehicles, I couldn't get that test drive off my mind--I loved the quality feel.
Now nearly 10 years and 220,000 miles later, I can say, hands down, this is by far the best investment I have ever made. It floats and rides like a luxury vehicle with all the power and versatility of a truck without the noise and trucky feel. Also I love sitting high in traffic, giving a great vantage point for traffic ahead.
With very minimal investment over the years, almost entirely regular maintenance like tires, oil changes and a timing belt or three...this car has been an absolute joy to own. I hope it goes another 100,000! After all these years I can't imagine driving a vehicle I would enjoy more!
Love this vehicle!"
Pros: "It IS everything you want in a medium size SUV"
Cons: "no lift kits, no back seat cup-holders, milage"

"From the flat highways of texas, to the many Colorado snow storms, treacherous texas ice storms, and muddy mountain offroading, camping, towing (if you have hitch welded on), road-tripping, moving belongings, this vehicle has blown me away at the versatility. Almost every time someone gets in my car, the first thing they talk about is their first impression of the car!(despite my messy college fast-food trash all over the floor) This vehicle absolutely flies under the radar for versatility dependability.
- It has great turning radius
- very high ceiling inside
- amazing 360 visibility for driver
- comfortable seats
- amazing sound system(2001, if speakers have been taken care of)
- very appealing exterior design
- there is a large stow-away for the back seat to fold in. great for other storage as well.
- the list goes on and on and on.
HOWEVER. The Montero design is not compatible with any lift-kits for off road purposes. Gas mileage is to be expected for an SUV. I'm in college so mileage is the biggest practicality for me.
NOTE. The assembly design under the hood is a pain-in-the-BUTT if you are looking to do any maintenance yourself. Also, my paint on the hood&roof is corroding, but that could have been from the road-salts in the ski-resort town I lived in for a year.
IF I COULD DO IT OVER. I would get leather interior."
"Had to write about this car after using this site for so long....only fair.
I do not work or have worked for Mitsubishi and am the orig owner.
This is the best car I have ever owned. Best sized SUV, most comfortable, best driving position, best view out the windshield, most reliable.
Only drawback is the mpg.
Only negative was the dealer I purchased the car from, in NJ...really bad.
If Mitsubishi still offered in US, my car buying search would be over."
Cons: "Rear seats don't flatten down for more cargo space"

"This vehicle has been the best reliable vehicle I've ever had. I have driven it in hot weather, snow and ice and never had any steering trouble and never got stuck. I've never taken it off road but believe it handle that great.
I am the second owner. The first was my niece who I bought it from in 2007. I paid $13,000. It does have wear and tear from moving a couple of times across country, and it's been a family car. The spare tire cover on the back has been scorched by the sun and car washes although I still use it.
I've lived the room inside but one thing I've wondered is why both rear seats don't flatten for more cargo space in the rear compartment. Other than that it's been a great car."
"I have never owned a vehicle that I have loved to drive and felt safer in than this car. It has always been very dependable and a comfortable ride. I have traveled across the country a few different times with the higher miles on it and it performed wonderfully. Towing a trailer one time decreased my gas mileage significantly but this is not a heavy duty SUV. Taking it camping or off roading was a piece a cake with the higher drive train. Traveling in 12-18 inches of snow is as easy to drive as a dry street with the four-wheel drive. It just recently died on me after driving it very hard and I am heart broken. I have not felt nearly as safe and comfortable in my new vehicle as I was in this wonderful Montero. If Mitsubishi would make this same car again I would buy it in a heart beat. The ONLY thing that was a negative was the gas mileage and I enjoyed everything else so much that I was willing to pay for the gas."
