"I got this car for 1,000. It needed work but after 1,500 at the shop i have put more than 100,000 miles on mine. They need timing belt work around 170,000 miles. I have had two of these cars, the transmissions are rock solid!! I have hauled a 4,000lb trailer with the 3.0 and 3.5 and they are real tug boats. I do like the 3.5 more than the 3.0s seeing as 3.0 is a little slow off the line. Surprisingly the 3.5 gets much better MGP than the 3.0. i had a 3.0 for 2 years and got 15-16mpg while the 3.5 (i have now) gets 17mpg city 20-21 highway. Seats 7 and very versatile; takes 30mins to remove all seats and there is enough room to slide a stand up jet ski in the back and hit the lake. Amazing little SUVs"
"I have owned my Montero for over 9 years. I've taken it in the snow, ice, sand, and off-roading. It is super reliable and I can always depend on its strength and usefulness. The Montero seats 7, has a sliding sun roof, a useful roof rack, and can tow like a truck."
"When I purchased this Montero I was told (by more than one source) that I would only get rid of it because I was tired of looking at it (implying its well built and will last). Well its 15 years and 160,000 miles later and I'm still not tired of looking at it. The late 90's edition was the last one with a truck frame. It is rugged, has 3 modes of 4 wheel drive and there have been no major problems with the engine, drive chain, chassis or the body (garage kept has helped). The only minor qualms are that while it is a comfortable vehicle its not a high speed cross country cruiser and has been an oil leaker post 100K. I plan on keeping it beyond the 200K and 20 year marks."
"Handles pretty well for an suv. Spacious with extra backseats. Pretty advanced for its time. 4wd and power steering are a bonus for tough driving conditions like snow and icy roads. Can tow pretty much what people will tow. Nice wiht traction tires."
"I absolutely love this car. It is extremely comfortable to drive. It is my daily driver but I also take it on off-road camping trips in the summer. It is extremely reliable.
* HORRIBLE gas mileage- I get 13 mpg on the highway.
* It is hard to drive over 75 mph- the ride gets a little rough"
