2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor Review

By

The 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor crossover utility vehicle is more highway cruiser than rugged off-road truck but, given how most SUV owners use their vehicles, it actually makes quite a sensible choice for families on the go. With room for five, a versatile and ample cargo hold and a powerful V6 engine, the Endeavor has all the attributes to compete in this class, and its stylish exterior may appeal to those unimpressed by more pedestrian offerings. Mitsubishi is also making some great deals to move the Endeavor, another favorable reason to test-drive this often-overlooked value.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a tough- and rugged-looking crossover that drives like a car, yet offers plenty of ground clearance, a vehicle like the 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor should suit your needs.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you need the added capacity a third-row seat provides, the Endeavor won't work for you. The Endeavor cannot tow as much as a truck-based SUV, nor is it designed for serious off-road use, and it requires the use of more expensive Premium gas.

What's New for 2008

For 2008 Mitsubishi equips all Endeavors with anti-lock brakes (ABS), Active Stability and Traction Control and a power-steering-fluid cooler. The rear glass hatch which opens independently of the main hatch is no longer available on LS models.

Driving the Endeavor

Driving Impressions The 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor tracks straight and true, with no play felt in the direct and responsive steering. Its sleek shape also seems to be immune to strong crosswinds and...

buffeting. Around town, the Endeavor's modest size translates into easy parking and maneuverability, and even the shortest drivers should find they have not only a commanding view of the road, but also good visibility all the way around. Mitsubishi's impressive Sportronic Sequential-Shift automatic transmission is standard on the Endeavor, allowing you the option of selecting your own gear changes without the need for a clutch pedal. Another especially nice feature is the incorporation of small triangular front A-pillar windows that allow you to see people and objects that might otherwise be blocked from view by the thick windshield pillars.

Blue Dash Lighting
The Endeavor's neat blue dash lighting has a hip, youthful appeal.

Handy Power Outlets
You shouldn't have a problem finding places to plug in your accessories; the Endeavor features four 12-volt power outlets.

2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor Details
2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor photo Interior

A look inside the 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor reveals a modern, clean interior with seating for five and a wide rear cargo area. The dash is rather pronounced, with a strong center section that stands out and is flanked by two wing-like vents. In the center of the console are the climate and audio controls, as well as an LCD graphic display screen that shows various functions and information and the optional DVD navigation. The large cargo area can be expanded by folding down one or both rear-seat backs.

Exterior

With its chiseled good looks and tall body, the 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor stands apart from the mundane "overgrown station wagon" crowd. On SE models, an available flip-up glass rear window makes it easy to access the cargo area and, with the rear seats folded, the Endeavor can swallow quite a few mulch bags. The Endeavor may be classified as a crossover, but it has a bold look that is pure SUV. What may surprise many consumers is the fact that under its bulging flanks resides a two-wheel-drive unit-body platform shared with the 2008 Mitsubishi Galant sedan.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Standard equipment on the Endeavor LS includes a 3.8-liter V6, Sportronic Sequential-Shift four-speed automatic transmission, manual air conditioning, front, front side-impact and front and rear side-curtain airbags, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), Active Stability and Traction Control, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, rear defroster, remote keyless entry, four 12-volt outlets, AM/FM stereo with CD, cruise control, remote tailgate release, tire pressure monitor, 17-inch alloy wheels and a rear wiper/washer. As standard, the SE trim level is fitted with numerous trim and feature upgrades.

Optional Equipment

Options are arranged by trim level and include a tow package, two-tone leather seating, all-wheel drive, power sunroof, retractable cargo cover, fog lights and navigation. The Special Edition Extra Value Package includes heated outside mirrors, flip-up rear window, steering-wheel audio controls, leather seating, heated front seats, eight-way power driver's seat with manual lumbar support, 360-watt Rockford Acoustic Premium audio, SIRIUS Satellite radio and a color LCD center display screen.

Under the Hood

The Endeavor offers only one engine choice---a powerful V6 that pulls strongly and achieves acceptable fuel economy. One downside to this powertrain is that it requires Premium gas to run at peak efficiency.

3.8-liter V6
225 horsepower @ 5000 rpm
255 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3750 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/22 (2WD), 15/19 (AWD)

"Bought new has great room inside XLS package is great. Goes anywhere in the snow and visibility is great. Good power roomy can haul most anything needed. Only two row seating and road noise was problem until put new set of tires on. Gas mileage at 18 mpg not great but size and power are good. Road clearance is good, but still easy access in and out. Interior trim little on the cheap side but functional. Never had a mechanical issue outside of regular maintenance items."

Pros: "Better buy than more popular SUVs"

Cons: "none"

"This vehicle doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but that is less to go wrong. The 4 speed automatic transmission must have an overdrive because the engine doesn't rev up, even when I'm going 70 mph. The 3.8 engine has better get up and go than many bigger engines."

"Bought this SUV 11 years ago with the intention to keep it for 7 years. It seems that it will never die, with mininal maintainance this vehicle will keep going and going. I'm planning to keep it until it stops running. Even though Mitsubishi losses half its value very quicky it has saved me the monthly payment on a new car for 4 years."

CASPER

"This is such a good buy, like the fact that you don't see it allover the place. Meaning those who own it know the true value of having it.....this is my second one . Totaled the first in accident . Walked away unhurt. made such an impression on the safety features, 4 star crash rating that I had to have another ... If I could walk away from that ....anything other than a SEMI hitting it you should survive !!!"

Easy to explore the back country!

"Very reliable vehicle that hasn't let me down or stranded. Drive is very smooth. AWD makes dead stop uphill driving a dream - no hand brakes needed! Lot's of cargo space for camping trips. Handles rough roads and off road terrains very nicely. Maintenance costs have been reasonable and performance does not degrade when premium gas is not used."
