"I generally like the Mountaineer. It drives nicely and is comfortable to ride in. It seats 7 people comfortably, but is seriously lacking in grocery space with the third row seat upright. Our Nissan Quest was a MUCH better utility vehicle for a family on the go, but a maintenance nightmare.
The Mountaineer's transmission started acting strangely at about 50,000 miles, and by 62,000 was completely shot. It is a KNOWN DEFECT on the 5R55 transmission. I suggest you research it before you buy."
"This is the first Mercury Mountaineer that I've owned and it is everything I thought it would be. We have driven my Mountaineer on every family vacation over the past five years and the rida has been great everytime. I would definitely recommend buying this vehicle for anyone in the market for a SUV."
Pros: "Reliable, great in Michigan weather, comfortable"
Cons: "DVD system plays through the main speakers"

"I have owned several vehicles including coupes, sedans, other SUVs and even pick-ups and this is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I bought my Mountaineer in 2008 with 14,000 miles on it and have enjoyed her ever since. When I visited the dealership in 2008 I was actually looking to buy a Ford Edge and was very pleasantly surprised when I test drove the Mountaineer, which lead me to buy it instead. We have 2 children and with the 3rd row up or down, we have plenty of room for all of us and our junk too. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone that loves comfort, space and beauty in an SUV."
