"This has been a good car for me. it has had only a couple of problems (one major - fuel pump); and I feel very safe driving the vehicle. I like being "up" higher than sedans. My biggest complaint is not getting good mileage."

Pros: "Solid ride, totally reliable, holds a ton of cargo"

Cons: "Gas mileage not great."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I LOVE this car! Bought it new in 1999, have driven it in all sorts of weather, on thousand-mile trips a dozen times. So reliable, so comfortable, so solid. Never let me down. Just now, things are starting to go.....just replaced a cracked radiator, and the sway bars' linkage is broken, so I'm (sadly) getting a new car."

Pros: "reliable for now"

Cons: "needs work"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 6

"The vehicle is great. I am looking to purchase 4WD, AWD this is RWD. I bought this when I lived in Florida but now I live in Pittsburgh Pa.Having trouble with the door lock not opening with key or remote. I think I can fix that. A friend told me my transmission feels like its slipping a little. The engine hood does not stay open on its own , I have to prop with a baseball bat."

One of the best cars I've ever owned.

"Bought the car used from a rental agency. Has been totally trouble-free since the day I brought it home. That was 103,000 miles ago. Car handles very well, is a pleasure to drive and is very comfortable for long trips. No regrets whatsoever about buying this car."

Pros: "Cargo space, reliability, bad-weather driving"

Cons: "Quality over time, AWD not for towing, gas guzzler"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 7

"Obtained this truck from family and owned it for a year before selling it. Surprisingly reliable, considering it wasn't driven much, plenty of cargo room. The 5.0L V8 provides lots of power and moves this heavy AWD vehicle with ease. However, don't use a Mountaineer for towing anything heavier than a 2600 lb trailer/camper. The AWD system is not heavy enough for it and the transfer case will go out quickly. The V8 drinks gas regardless of how you drive, at best 18mpg combined. Some features started misbehaving after 148000 miles, such as windows, wipers, fog lights and the expensive-to-replace LED tail light in the hatch. However, parts are very plentiful, thanks to Ford badge-engineering with the Explorer, so maintenance is relatively cheap. Be careful about how fast you take curves, though."
