2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review

By

Luxurious, prestigious and dynamic, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has firmly entrenched itself as the definitive midsize luxury sedan and wagon. Available in rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts, and powered by a diverse engine lineup that's bookended by a high-mileage diesel engine and a pavement-punishing 507-horsepower AMG V8, the E-Class lineup gets a few minor enhancements for the 2009 model year, allowing it to better compete in what has become one of the most competitive segments in the industry.

You'll Like This Car If...

Even though the 2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is more eager than ever to take the curvy back road once in awhile, it remains the category's easy choice for those that prefer making a more stately arrival.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If the status afforded by a luxury car isn't as important to you as the actual comfort, quality and amenities, you may be happier spending thousands less on one of the well-regarded entries from Infiniti, Lexus or Cadillac.

What's New for 2009

The E350 and E550 Sport models tout a standard AMG Sport Package which adds AMG front and rear aprons, 18-inch wheels, a lowered suspension, dual chrome exhaust, tinted blue glass and an AMG steering wheel with shift paddles.

Driving the E-Class
Driving Impressions

Quiet, comfortable and dignified at highway speeds, Mercedes' established E-Class remains the quintessential old-money midsize sedan. However, with its powerful V6 and V8 engines coupled to the...

... no-charge Sport Package option, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is also the sportiest yet. To be sure, we've never had as much fun in an E-Class (excepting all AMG models, of course) as we did in the Sport editions of the E350 and E550 sedans – and on some tight, winding roads, no less. The seven-speed transmission is nearly transparent in its operation, and a quicker steering ratio provides a more responsive feel. Stop-and-go driving is noticeably smoother thanks to retirement of the grabby electrohydraulic brake system that plagued the E-Class from 2003 to 2006.

Keyless Go
Mercedes' keyless entry and start system makes it possible to knock out all your Saturday morning errands without ever removing the key/transmitter from your pocket.

Sport Package
The Sport Package is more than just AMG-branded bigger wheels and dual exhaust outlets, the package includes a lowered sport suspension that delivers notably livelier handling.

2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Details
2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class photo Interior

Inside the E-Class you'll find a tasteful mix of leather and wood, comfortable seats and straightforward controls placed within easy reach. Standard burl walnut wood trim and black gauges give way in Sport models to black bird's-eye maple trim, matte chrome highlights and white gauges. The standard equipment list includes the 510-watt harman/kardon LOGIC7 premium audio system that includes two surround sound speakers and one subwoofer for a total of 12 speakers. Wagon models feature a disappearing, rear-facing third-row seat.

Exterior

At once sleek and elegant, we think the attractive design of the E-Class perfectly communicates its Teutonic luxury mannerisms. Seemingly timeless Mercedes-Benz styling cues abound on the E-Class, from its large four-bar grille and stand-up hood ornament to its racy AMG Sport package, the E-Class is truly a car for all seasons. Sport Package-equipped models are differentiated by black grille inserts, a lower ride height, dual exhaust outlets and a handful of other tasteful touches.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Standard equipment highlights include a harman/kardon premium audio system, in-dash six-disc CD changer, memory front seats, sunroof and a full complement of safety features that includes eight airbags, electronic stability control and Mercedes' PRE-SAFE system that prepares for an impending accident by tightening the seat belts, adjusting the front seats and closing the windows and sunroof.

Optional Equipment

Some of the more compelling options include two designo packages (Espresso and Graphite), a keyless entry and start system, heated and active-ventilated (cooling) front seats, front and rear parking sensors, panorama sunroof, electronic trunk closer (standard on the E63 AMG Wagon), navigation system, adaptive headlamps, Bluetooth hands-free telephone connection, voice control and iPod integration.

Under the Hood

From the efficient BLUETEC diesel engine to the ferociously powerful 6.3-liter AMG V8, the E-Class' engine lineup is one of the most dynamic on the planet. All of the engines are mated to a manually-selectable seven-speed automatic transmission, except 4MATIC all-wheel-drive models, which get a five-speed automatic. The V8 models feature a sophisticated adjustable air suspension with adaptive dampers to combine a smooth highway ride with firm handling. In addition to a more aggressive suspension, the available Sport Package includes more powerful brakes.

"I bought this at 116K miles. I'm the second owner of the car. It's been extremely good in long distance cruises, you won't feel tired. It's incredibly spacious and comfortable. You can drive it fast if you want, but you don't feel like it. You'd just like to drive at a medium pace and enjoy the luxury feel of this amazing car. I've a 2003 E320 (gasoline, not diesel) and I get 31 mpg on the highway. The only issue I've had so far is one of my catalytic converters started to rattle. Apart from that it drives like a brand-new car to this day. I think it's important to buy a car that has perfect maintenance records. My car has never been maintained outside a Mercedes Benz dealer and I do the same. As long as you maintain this car well, it will last very long."

Pros: "Beautiful car."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 1

"This is by far the most disappointing car. It's particular engine has a flaw with the camshaft bearings. A $6,000 repair bill and still waiting for my $4,000 refund from Mercedes due to a law suit filed and settled. Also the 7 speed trans had to be fixed for another $1,700. Besides all that the car is beautiful, I like it better than the sport model for its ride."

"I have owned 2 other e-class. a 2002 and 2004 both were new at the time. i purchased the 2003 e-500 from a neighbor the car was in great condition. after about a year the air shocks went cost over $4000 to fix about 6 months the ABS system went $2500. went on line and found out that the 2003 e-500 is a problem all around. i will never buy a MB. ALL fluff over priced and repairs at the dealer are crazy. stay clear"

"I just purchased recently this use, low miles, well taken off E350, I've own a number of BMW's (5 & 3 series), but this vehicle is made for long trips, short trips and everything in between, in style and comfort. Great daily driver. Got a great deal based other E350's for sale in my area. Researched the vehicle and prices, which I advise everyone to do. Had my mechanic review it with two thumbs up."

Pros: "It is the Lowest cost long term med size car ever"

Cons: "Synthetic Oil changes every 15000 miles"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"Other than normal wear items, ie tires, oil, filters, brakes, mounts, I've only had one large service bill in over 300,000 miles of driving. Being the last of the non bluetec diesels, this straight 6 Mileage ranges from 33 to 41 mpg, depending on weather, tire pressure, temperature and road conditions. Changing the coolant system thermostat will increase the fuel mileage up to another 10%. Interestingly the newer blue tecs lose about 10-12% mpg. But the brand new 2015 E250 4 cyl maybe a game changer. There is no other more efficient comfortable car on the planet, I can drive for 6 hours straight and feel refreshed. My VW Jetta diesel the limit is a few hours. I'm planning on at least 500,000 miles before going to the new 4 cyl E250 bluetec (or maybe look at the dark side - BMW diesel). I wouldn't hesitate to drive across country in this well built and well maintained vehicle. Around 4 years this cruiser will retire. I have seen the E class as taxis with over a million miles in Germany. This has been the best all around Mercedes Ive ever owned, out of a total of 8. If the car has excellent service & maintenance records it can be a great buy, if not keep away...."
