2007 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review

By

While not as racy as the new GL-Class, or in the running to win any awards for aerodynamic efficiency, there is no denying the ability of the G-Class Benz to make a lasting impression. Big, boxy and about as modern as a dial-up phone, the G500's military roots serve it well, especially when it comes to off-road ability. Aftermarket manufacturers have a wide assortment of chrome accents and big wheels, allowing the discerning G500 driver to personalize his or her vehicle in ways the original designers could never have imagined. But be warned: Though priced similarly to a Land Rover Range Rover, the G500 does not return the same refined ride or quiet cabin.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you like your SUVs to look rugged and adventurous (think Hummer), you'll appreciate the old school styling of the G500, and millionaire off-roaders will love this vehicle's ability to climb, descend and overtake.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The G500's styling is far from design's cutting edge, and interior noise levels and ride comfort lag behind those of the Range Rover and Escalade.

What's Significant About This Car?

The 2007 G500 receives a seven-speed automatic transmission, while the G55 AMG maintains its five-speed unit. New standard features include a heated windshield, a new center console design and bi-xenon headlamps.

Driving the G-Class

Driving Impressions Power for the G500 comes from Mercedes-Benz's dynamo of a V8, the 292-horsepower 5.0-liter engine. A strong contender in any field, the 5.0-liter seems to possess unending reserves of low-end...

torque that make the G500 move as quickly and responsively as an M-Class. The G-Class needs this much power because it is almost literally built like a tank (or at least an armored personnel carrier), and weighs just over 5,500 pounds. This immense bulk is one of the contributing factors to keeping the G500 planted firmly on the ground, both on and off-road. The G500 features an advanced four-wheel-drive system that is permanently engaged. Once off road, you can place the two-speed transfer case into low and take off up the steepest grades without much concern. Three buttons on the center dash allow you further control by permitting the front, center and rear differentials to be locked, either all at once or in random order.

Designo Series
The optional Designo Series packages add a feeling of exclusivity to an already exclusive vehicle.

Sculpted Bucket Seats
Sculpted bucket seats help keep the driver and passengers in place when the off-roading gets tough.

2007 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Details
Interior

The G500's upright design translates to an uncommonly roomy interior, with more than ample head, leg and hip room for passengers and generous storage space for their cargo. Mercedes has added a 21st-century touch to the dash and door panels by covering them in soft leather and real wood; likewise, the angular dash is somewhat softened by the installation of the COMAND system's LCD screen and the rounded speedometer and instrument gauges. You'll find the G500's seats to be very tall and upright and somewhat firm, in traditional Mercedes fashion. The rear seats are split in a 60/40 configuration and can be folded and flipped to provide more cargo room.

Exterior
2007 Mercedes-Benz G-Class photo

Originally designed to serve as a military vehicle, the G-Class soon found its way to U.S. shores to serve civilian duty as the Mercedes-Benz off-road flagship. Though the design may be old (over 25 years, in fact), the vehicle's remarkable robustness, with thicker-than-average sheet metal and hand-built construction, has allowed it to sail through every government crash test with flying colors.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The G500 comes with permanent four-wheel drive, locking differentials (center, front and rear), stability control, traction control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, COMAND system with harman/kardon audio and navigation, rear park assist, 10-way power heated leather seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated windshield, bi-xenon headlamps and a rear wiper/washer.

Optional Equipment

The G55 AMG package is among the few options, as are SIRIUS Satellite Radio and some dealer-installed upgrades.

Under the Hood

The base 5.0-liter V8 has plenty of torque, a figure more important than horsepower, given the G500's ponderous bulk. Acceleration is strong but falls off somewhat at highway speeds. The AMG version, with its supercharged 5.5-liter engine, is more likely to get you in trouble with the law, and can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 5.5-seconds.

5.0-liter V8
292 horsepower @ 5500 rpm
336 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2800 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 12/15 mpg

5.5-liter V8 Supercharged
493 horsepower @ 6100 rpm
516 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2750 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 11/13 mpg

leaving for Florida....tears in my eyes...

"So...let's remember this is a truck. Mine was $70,000 when I bought it...I drove it for all these years...and now it is on its way down South for its 'golden years' Over the years I've put MUCHO money into it, which for that price of a car I shouldn't have had to do....The electric locks didn't work on some doors....the windows wouldn't go up and down on some windows...the underside had to be replaced...the windscreen wipers gave out during a rainstorm (not fun)....and inside the dash, when the temp. dropped below 25 degrees or so I was treated to a hum...yes, it sounded like a big bumblebee was in the car. I took it in numerous times but it was never solved...we 'think' it was the cables that got hard when it was cold and some air was rushing through, and it was like a gazoo. Getting in and out was a problem in the winter as the 'running board' is almost not there.(I'm not 76 so it was getting hard) ..so hold on when jumping up. Oh, and the transmission right now is in question....it is going down South, as I said, and my son-in-law wants to buy it....I will have him sign an 'as is' paper :) Soooo, now I'm driving a GLK Mercedes 2015 (which I would say is a women's Mercedes) ...which I do love, but there were tears in my eyes when they came to take my 500 G away..the man who delivered it to my daughter said he felt bad taking it as I was visibly upset..because even if I had all the problems I still loved it, as did my friends."

"This is the 3rd G-wagen I have: 1994, 2004, 2009 G55AMG. Total mileage I had on 1994 - 120000 mi, 2004 - 212000 mi and on 2009 now is about 100000 mi. Only minor problems. This is really one of the most reliable and fun to drive truck."

Cons: "price, window regulators fail, ac weak in back"

"I have a 2002 G wagon that I am just now finally going to be allowed to be pried away from me in order to get a newer one. The vehicle is among the most fun and satisfying to drive of any I have ever owned (a dozen plus cars so far) and I have kept it longer. Why? - Go anywhere, anytime any weather confidence in a vehicle that is perfectly acceptable for business meetings as well - Feels different from any other car I've driven, more solid and capable, and decent handling and pickup considering that its a massive SUV weighing over $5K pounds - Overall quality and reliability has been excellent, I have 120K miles on it with nothing more than regular dealer maintenance, no major failures - More capable off road with stock rims and tires than my friend's "built" off road vehicles - Distinct from all the other cookie cutter SUV's out there and UNLIKE a new rover, Escladade or GL is actually a hard-core off road vehicle - one trip on rough road in the others will blow out your poncey air suspension (speaking from experience) CONS - Rear AC is mediocre - looks bigger outside than it is inside but still big enough, I'm a size 3xl - Window regulators are a weak spot and often break, not ok in a $100K car - the G's don't get the state of the art electronics that the S and GL class do - this is stupid on the part of Mercedes HOW TO BUY By a used one (ideally a lease return) from the Benz dealer that qualifies for "certified" status then pay for the extra FACTORY (not aftermarket) warranty that adds up to 3 years and UNLiMITED MILES to the originally warranty, this both saves you 30% on the price of a new one and gets you a perfect car with a better than new car warranty. I'm VERY picky about what I buy and Mercedes has beautiful lease return cars that have been driven gently all the time - the smartest option dollar for dollar on any MB car."

"A cut above the rest. in a world where range rover is at every corner the G really stands out. It is a great car for the family and in the city. I feel comfortable knowing my 5 year old is riding in the back of this tank. i have S550 as well. The G is luxorious but not luxory especially if you have an S class Benz."

"I bought my G500 last June. I love it. Maintenance is expensive, and so is the fuel, but if you can afford a G, you shouldn't complain. I will be a loyal G owner only trading up to a silver G55 :)"
