"Other than normal wear items, ie tires, oil, filters, brakes, mounts, I've only had one large service bill in over 300,000 miles of driving.
Being the last of the non bluetec diesels, this straight 6 Mileage ranges from 33 to 41 mpg, depending on weather, tire pressure, temperature and road conditions. Changing the coolant system thermostat will increase the fuel mileage up to another 10%. Interestingly the newer blue tecs lose about 10-12% mpg. But the brand new 2015 E250 4 cyl maybe a game changer.
There is no other more efficient comfortable car on the planet, I can drive for 6 hours straight and feel refreshed. My VW Jetta diesel the limit is a few hours. I'm planning on at least 500,000 miles before going to the new 4 cyl E250 bluetec (or maybe look at the dark side - BMW diesel). I wouldn't hesitate to drive across country in this well built and well maintained vehicle. Around 4 years this cruiser will retire. I have seen the E class as taxis with over a million miles in Germany. This has been the best all around Mercedes Ive ever owned, out of a total of 8.
If the car has excellent service & maintenance records it can be a great buy, if not keep away...."
"Nice array of features for the driver to set at a given preference. The "500" provides great acceleration making it fun to drive and good for avoiding unwanted driving situations.
The adjustable suspension and other high tech features are expensive to maintain. I purchased an extended after-market warranty, which was costly, but less expensive then being without it.
Is it worth it? Yes! Love the E-500!!"
Cons: "Placement of MP3/Ipod cords; lack of backseat pass"

"This car has all the features I required, plus many additions. The leather heated seats with the button adjustments on the door is great- no fumbling out of view to find buttons. The ride is comfortable, quiet and smooth. The only maintenance thus far has been routine. I owned 2 Volvos prior to this car and the maintenance cost, thus far, has been less. The audio system is great, including the built-in GPS. The design of the dashboard and steering wheel buttons are conveniently placed. The 4matic feature handles well in wet and snowy conditions. The moon roof (versus sunroof) is great and much appreciated by backseat passengers. The things I would change (not biggies) are adding folding back seats for trunk access and moving the MP3/IPOD cords from the glove compartment and closer to the driver."
