Pros: "Comfortable to drive and also be a passenger in."

Cons: "Cup holders and window buttons, wrong spots."

"Almost 250k I have done bare minimum to this great machine and I know I can get in, start, and drive every day. Oil change, tires and a few belts. My car still runs with great gas mileage. The places this car has driven to and from. Coast to coast and back again... and yet again."

Pros: "A blast to drive, incredibly reliable"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This is my second PR5, the first was totaled when someone ran a stop sign in front of me, a very sad day. For twenty years I owned a Honda CRX and when it could no longer be inspected, I had to search for a new car that was comparable. The only one out of many that I test drove that compared was the PR5. It's quick, small gear ratio shifting, tight suspension makes it so much fun to drive and the maintenance has been minimal. Great mileage as well, tons of room inside it's leather interior, great sound system that came standard. I'd like to know if anyone has ever had to replace the windshield, as I have to now after Safelite broke mine doing and simple repair. Manufacturer price is $600, after market (have no clue if that will even look like the original) is what the insurance company will pay for at $145, crazy. I will be devastated if I cannot maintain the integrity of this vehicle as it is one of the best I've ever owned. You cannot go wrong with this car if you can find one."

Pros: "SUPER fun to drive, Lots of usable space!"

Cons: "12 years old"

It's so utilitarian!

"I bought my first '02 PR5 (this is the proper vernacular for owners of this vehicle) in late 2004 from a dealer with less than 40k miles on it. At the time it was 2nd on my list of cars I really wanted to own just behind the Subaru WRX wagon. This is a COOL car! As others have pointed out, it drives like a go-kart and feels sufficiently powered though it has a meager 130 HP. In 2012 I was minding my own business and someone broadsided me in the middle of the day. The damage was extensive, and the car was totaled. I started to search for a suitable replacement and test drove some other Japanese vehicles. None of them held a candle to my beloved PR5. I started searching for another PR5 and found one with fewer miles, upgraded wheels and a moon roof! Can you say UPGRADE?!? I bought it with the cash from the insurance company and had just enough leftover to perform some maintenance on the car and replace some of the sound system components (new stereo and front speakers). That is literally all it needed! I have 170,000 miles on my second one now and she continues to purr like a kitten. If you are thinking of getting one of these, DO IT!"

Pros: "fun to drive, reliable, cheap to own/maintain"

Cons: "specialized tires"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This has been an absolute beast of a car for me. I've owned it 8 years and have never had a major issue with it. I've taken it cross country twice and moved several times as well. It's been in New York City and the deserts of Utah. The gas milage is great, getting up to 34 mpg highway. I've only done routine maintenance on it. The downside is primarily that Mazda only made this car for one year meaning spare parts and specialized knowledge for it isn't that high. On the other hand, mazdas are common cars and last forever. It's been a great car and I plan on driving it till it dies...probably 10 more years from now."

"I have owned 2 Protégé 5's. The first one I gave to a 16 year old upon earning her license. It was promptly wrecked but she walked away unharmed and honestly the car was nearly unrecognizable. That's why I purchased the second Protégé 5. Safety is very important to me, it gets great gas mileage and is very reliable."
