Pros: "Reliable"

Cons: "Resale value"

"I like my Mazda protege. Cheap on gas, cheap general maintenance, easy to drive. I have only had to replace the serpentine belts. There are two of them and they can be a pain but it only cost me $40. I would reccomend this car to a student. Only problem is the low resale value."

"Hands down, if i had to purchase this car all over again, i'd do it in a heart beat. Owned my protege for 9+ years now. Engine and manual transmission have given me zero problems, and I have drivin this car from 78,000 when i bought it, to currently 211,000. I have only had minor issues with replacing typical parts that aren't expensive, like radiator and fuel pump. Very zippy and fun to drive."

Pros: "Durable, Peppy, low cost to drive"

Cons: "Repairs, tho infrequent, need expert attention."

"212,000 and still running! Last 1990 model went 300,000 before suffering massive systems failure, went and bought this one. Interior needed to be tougher-front cloth seats a bit cheesy, knobs/buttons on radio not so good, some peeling of chrome on radiator grille, but these are all minor issues. Watch out for the ignition coils; they're a notorious weak spot for this car, and I've seen new ones bad out of the box. Make sure you get them from Mazda, if you can. It's worth the price. If you go after-market, they'll wear out fast, cause misfiring and blow your cat, not cheap! The biggest enemy I've had for this car is the people (including some dealers) who have worked on it. The motto "Mazdas are different" should be engraved on the VIN plate; they're 90% of the best engineering I've seen, and 10% of the worst. Translation: they hardly ever break down, but when they do...ow. Parts are more expensive than Hindas, Toyota, etc. And definitely need a Mazda-saavy mech. Mazda is very loath about releasing specs on their parts...so go to the dealer and save some grief for those."

Pros: "got new cooling system and head gasket"

Cons: "got a front seal leak"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"This car has been a really good car just not enough room.I bought it after it had a new motor put in and had about 65000 miles on it odometer read 185000. Since I have put a new radiator, belts ,hoses, water pump and head gasket. It does have a front seal leak but I only have to put about a qt of oil every 2-3 wks. I also put new tires 2 years ago. This car has been our back up car for the past year."

Pros: "solid, reliable, fun to drive."

Cons: "location of cup holders, height of seat belts."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"In the 11 years that I have owned this car, it has given me almost no trouble. Recently I have had to make some relatively expensive repairs, but nothing related to the general integrity of the vehicle, just parts that one would expect to have to replace eventually. I've been loyal to the Mazda brand for close to 30 years, and I intend to buy another one soon. My only complaint would be that the cup holders are too close to the environmental controls, and the seat belt wasn't designed for someone below average height. I've certainly been able to live with these shortfalls."

"I recently took this car to the shop and was told that the timimg belt needs to be replaced as well as the sway bar links. There are some minor bumps and scratches and the left mirror was knocked off by a pedestrian and is attached with tape. The car does drive well and has done well on long road trips. All four tires and radiator were replaced last year. No accidents."
