(good side)

"I bought this car about 2 months ago for $2k. It's been a pleasant surprise. I can't believe how strong the car is. Aside from some body dents and wheel well rust, the car is excellent. I never thought I would buy a Mazda.. I couldn't pass it up after a test drive. I enjoy driving the car. It's about 20hp underpowered and has a tight gear ratio but gets really good gas mileage anyways. Blows my mind. Love the car and hope it continues to run this well. I have respect for Mazda now."

Pros: "Brilliant design and durability. Thanks, Mazda."

Cons: "Wish this model was still in the marketplace..."

"Have been dedicated to good maintenance and Mazda parts since buying new in 2001. In return I have 200,000 miles with original engine and transmission and my mechanic has told me to look forward to 300,000- or more! I love the comfortable seats and easy to see dash controls. Good a/c, moonroof, stereo...best decision to buy this car. I am a Mazda advocate now!"

Pros: "Value."

Cons: "I seriously just don't know. Rusts easily?"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Bought a 2000 protege es 5-speed a month ago for 2050. I have a good idea of the cars mechanical condition by now. It drives like a sports car with tight handling and suspension. It Idles a little rough when the AC kicks on and off in neutral which scares me, but it hasn't ever came close to dying. I don't drive the car hard because its at 154K so i don't often accelerate above 4ish K RPM.. So I can't honestly say the car doesn't accelerate well but it seems a little under-powered. I can still pass people with ease but I'm a relatively fast driver and I'm usually the slowest off of a red light. Love everything about the car thought really for the price. Stoked I bought it. Excellent deal. This is the Honda Civic of Mazda with great features."

"I am extremely content with this vehicle. I was not looking to buy a Mazda to begin with. Family member was needing to get rid of it and so I bought it at a very good price as she was leaving town and needed the money. No regrets whatsoever. I use this car daily and commute some 90 miles each day. I get much better comfort and MPG from my new HOnda Civic, but do not want to add on the miles. However, I truly enjoy this little car and look forward to driving it all the time. Good purchase!!!"

"This was a basic transportation car, which is wat we bought it for. I have spent less that $1500 for repairs excluding regular maintance requirements during its 155000 miles. I would buy a Protoge again except I would want a higher option package."

Pros: "Reliable"

Cons: "Resale value"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"I like my Mazda protege. Cheap on gas, cheap general maintenance, easy to drive. I have only had to replace the serpentine belts. There are two of them and they can be a pain but it only cost me $40. I would reccomend this car to a student. Only problem is the low resale value."
