Pros: "great price, reliable"

Cons: "just a tad stiff ride."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Ahhmazing value and reliability. I've never once wondered if this car could get me through storms, distances etc. Not a cushy ride, you can feel the road. But drives well, handles well, better handling on snow and ice that cars twice the price, TO DATE haven't had any major issues, only wear and tear. I get 32-33mpg mixed city and hwy. Wish it could last forever."

Fantastic value for what I paid new for this car.

Pros: "great value, fun to drive, and dependable."

Cons: "Rides a little stiff"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"Exterior styling is a little bland, and the ride is a bit too stiff. Otherwise a great car, and the ES version is also very rare. Love the handling, 4 wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows and locks, and steering feel is very good. I put 15" alloy wheels and tires, and that made the car even better. Advertised mpg for this model was actually 26 city 32 highway. KBB has it wrong unfortunately."

Very good condition

Pros: "Fun to drive, handles very well."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Bought my Protégé new in 98 after extensive research, had a wonderful extended warranty and excellent reputation. It has 161,000 miles and is exceptionally reliable with regular maintenance. High mileage- checked every time I fill up. Starts in -30 degree temps even sitting outside. Absolutely the best car in deep snow and slush. When almost all other cars are stuck on ice and snow on steep hills, people are amazed when the Protégé keeps on going. I stop to help others and it takes right off when I get back in. Amazing for a little car so low to the ground. Very peppy, able to merge easily even when loaded. Travels well on the interstate, never an issue with larger vehicles or semis. Keeps up with the fastest with no hesitation. Traveled all over the country with my family, never a problem. The interior is somewhat plain and not always adaptable to today's cups, etc., but always manage to find a way to make them work (after all, a lot has changed since 98). Was damaged in a bad accident 3 years after purchase, Mazda dealer repaired, and not a problem since. Handles very well, so easy and fun to drive.Plan to keep the car until it quits. Love it. Will likely buy another Mazda when this one quits."

Pros: "Efficient, Reliable, Fun to Drive"

Cons: "Seats can get uncomfortable for longer trips"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"I bought a blue 1997 Protege LX automatic with 198k miles as my first car for college. I drove this car over 50 miles a day for two years and enjoyed every single moment. It was a real blast to drive and it always put a smile on my face. While it wasn't fast by any means, but it religiously got over 30 mpg saving me at the gas pump. This vehicle served me extremely well during the time I spent with it, unfortunately I had to get rid of the car when the fuel pump died at 230k miles. I can happily recommend this car for students or first time drivers who are looking for a dependable, efficient, and fun to drive commuter car."

Pros: "Great value, low maintenance, good MPG, reliable"

Cons: "Not many extras included in this model"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I bought this car as a temporary solution back in 2005 and have grown so attached to it that I can't bare to trade it in. I'm pretty determined to drive it until the wheels fall off at this point and will most likely get a Mazda when the time comes to move on. I'm at 197K miles now and (knock on wood) have yet to have any major repairs. I do the standard maintenance every year and it continues to run well. The resell value is impressive for how old it is. Great value. Only negative is that its hard to get some of the parts (like hubcaps) and the newer belts aren't exactly the right size."
