Pros: "HANDLING DYNAMICS! reliablity, and efficiency"

Cons: "rust...everywhere! catch it early!"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Great all around car for someone who truly enjoys driving, but also needs a reliable, practical commuter car. Handling dynamics are far superior to anything else in its class. I bought this car because I was driving 30k+ miles per year for work, and needed something reliable and fuel efficient, but didn't want to sacrifice driving fun. We also had another 2006 3i at the time, so I knew of its handling and reliability already. My 2006 3s served as autocross race car for 3 full seasons, netting 2 class championships at the regional level, and doing so on one set of race tires. Street tires have consistently lasted 60-70k miles for me, no problem. In fact, most everything seems to last a long time on this car: didn't burn out a single light bulb for over 8.5 years, original shocks/struts replaced at 144k only for upgrading to adjustable for autocross, original battery replaced after 9+ years, front brakes last 50k+, rears last 100k+, original clutch still going strong at 188k. Gas mileage varies from 30mpg mixed to 35-37 all highway. The only non-wear parts that have needed replacing have been A/C compressor and motor mounts. The other downside is the inevitable rust that seems to plague all Mazdas of this vintage. I do live in the heart of the rust belt, but have taken good car of the car's exterior. Still, the rust is starting to grow everywhere. Nothing perforated, but at least 10-12 different places where rust is forming. For me, the car has a lot of miles now, so it doesn't bother me quite as much, but I still think that this should not be happening to a car that's only nearing its 10th birthday. Car also has intermittent check engine light for EVAP system, which developed around 180k (yes, I've replaced the gas cap). It runs fine with the light on, so it doesn't concern me any. Other random complaints are: not enough seat adjustability, clutch pedal feel could be a little better, but I've driven much worse (anything made by VW), and EXTREMELY non-linear throttle mapping. 1/4 throttle on the pedal is really like 1/2 throttle and there is literally no difference between 3/4 and full throttle on the pedal, 3/4 throttle is full throttle. This may work for automatics, giving the average idiot the feeling that the car is peppier than it really is, but it makes it more difficult to get used to and annoying on a manual transmission car. But overall, the best car I've ever owned and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another of the same generation or newer. It started my passion for Mazdas, and now I currently own 3 of them."

Pros: "price mpg comfort reliability & cup holders."

Cons: "Dash design limits personal options"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I could spend days looking for bad things to say about this car, and still have nothing more than some minor personal preferences. The entertainment system is not easy to replace with with alternate brands. (But it is not too shabby to begin with.) I've gone through 22 tires in 8 years, but the North East US is not known for the smoothness of its roads and I choose the 17" lower profiles. That was probably poor planning on my part. On the upside, I have driven this car in thick traffic, open highway, and country roads. 100F Summer days, -35F winter nights, and snow that kept SUV owners home. The car has handled each case with relative ease. The engine has solid compression and acceleration is great. Passing power even at highway speed+ (70-75) is very respectable. Handling is one of the best I've experienced, especially on those country roads, reminding me of a Fiat x1/9 for curve hugging and road stickiness. It has needed no major repair other than front strut replacement, again roads are not made of marshmallow, and still can get between 27-29 mpg on the highway depending on speed and outside temperature. I've traveled as much as 45 hours over 5 days in it and the front comfort was great. Back seats are more than 2+2 style, but at 6'0" I would consider them form someone a bit more proportional to the leg room on trips more than 90 minutes. Overall, I have no reason to consider trading it out other than I adore the styling of the new models and hope the other attributes are similar. I would buy a 2015 or 2016 in a heartbeat."

"This car is so cute & fun. I love it! Not a lot of leg room in back seat, but I don't often have passengers back there. My friends who are moms & drive vans or suburbans all love to ride in my car. The compact size is perfect for squeezing into parking spaces. Before this I've always owned GM. But this is my favorite car I've owned! ZOOM ZOOM"

Pros: "fun to drive, tons of storage, reliable"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I unwillingly traded in my dream car (which was unreliable) for this in high school and did not want to like the Mazda3, but I fell in love with it! I drove this car for ten years and only traded it in because the sun here was too hard on it and there were some dry rot issues, plus it was starting to act its age. It was a hard decision, but since this car did right by me for so long, I traded it in for a 2015 Mazda3. The new one is even more of a dream to drive, but I'm still going to miss my cute little '05. I always thought the front looked a bit cat-like and adorable."

"This has been a wonderful car. Sharp styling, beautiful interior styling in the Grand Touring with red accents in the leather/suede interior. Sporty, very sharp handling. There is nothing negative I can say about this car. A little rough riding, but what do you expect in a car this speed oriented? Good gas mileage for a turbocharged car."
