With the full-size Sport Utility Vehicle beginning to fall from public favor, many manufacturers are pinning their hopes on a new class of SUV, commonly referred to as the crossover. The crossover combines the ride and handling of a car with the high seating position and spacious cargo hold of a large SUV, but without the larger vehicle's penalties for fuel economy and maneuverability. The latest crossover to enter the market is Mazda's CX-7, a sleek, five-passenger SUV with the heart of a sports car. Designed to evoke the same sporty image as Mazda's flagship performance coupe, the RX-8, the CX-7 may be the sportiest crossover you can buy for under $25,000. Although the CX-7's turbocharged four-cylinder engine may be a radical departure for those accustomed to a big V8, we think consumers will quickly warm up to its powerful performance and reasonable fuel consumption.

"I purchased the CX7 Grand Touring AWD new in 2007. It is very stylish, sporty, and comfortable. Great on long trips, and excellent in the snow. Bose Sound system is awesome. I have had no mechanical problems. Only 2 drawbacks: 1) Stock "Turismo" tires wore out within 30,000 miles. New Goodyears are holding up great. 2) For a 4 cylinder, the fuel economy is not very good. Only get the 23 mpg sticker when driving a steady 60 or so mph. If this car offered a manual transmission and got closer to 30 mph, it would be the ideal car for me."

"Purchased the car for my wife back in March 2007 and she really likes it. We have owned the car now for just shy of two years. It was in the shop once for a mechanical issue a few months ago, but Mazda took good care of us with a loner car. Some issues can be expected for a first year run on a car, being that 2007 was the first model year. The car overall is very fun to drive, and as long as the wife loves it all is good. I have read all the comments on here and some seem a little harsh. Every car is not going to please every buyer. For example I once owned a 1988 Jeep Wrangler that I purchsed new. It received horrible reviews in various consumer mags. Long story short I kept it 10+ years and 210,000 miles with no mechanical issues at all. In closing I would say this, test drive a Mazda CX7, and if it feels right for you buy one. Zoom Zoom"

"The CX7 AWD is a beast when you plant the throttle - hold on tight. Mine is refined with just a hint of lag at low rpm, nothing you would not expect from a turbo charger that needs rpms to breath. I have 7500 miles on it and get 19 mixed driving and 23 with the cruise set at 70 mph. In the coldest weather (Iowa -29F) the worst I got was 16. Mine runs great on 89 octane with 10% ethanol. I love the way it looks, mine is liquid platinum but the ride is what impresses me most about this AWD car. Drove it 2000 miles at Christmas time and it was a pleasure to drive, very comfortable for long stints behind the wheel. Only disappointed there is no port for Ipod and I did have a dash popping sound I fixed myself. Anyone have a problem with theirs I will let you in on the secret."
