2007 Lexus SC Review

By

Although you'll see numerous companies bragging about their all-new retractable hardtops, Lexus has been successfully building one of the best in the business for over five years. The elegant SC 430 convertible is a modern drop-top coupe that navigates the comfortable middle ground between luxury and performance. While it lacks the razor-sharp handling of a Mercedes-Benz SL or Cadillac XLR, the SC 430 is as equally at home cruising the winding turns of the Pacific Coast Highway as it is the shopping mall parking lots of Beverly Hills. Beyond its retractable hardtop, the SC 430 also boasts a set of wide and supremely comfortable front seats, as well as one of the segment's loveliest interiors.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you love seductive coupes that hold a few surprises for onlookers, the SC 430 is guaranteed to please. In addition, the Lexus dealer experience ranks among the best in the industry—a welcome benefit for any buyer.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The SC's curvaceous lines won't appeal to everyone. Though powerful, the SC does not handle as crisply as the Mercedes-Benz SL, BMW 6 Series or Cadillac XLR.

What's Significant About This Car?

Both driver and passenger receive standard knee airbags, while a new uniblade windshield wiper and new wheels round out the exterior changes. The limited edition Pebble Beach trim is again offered for 2007 and features Starfire Pearl exterior paint and Pimento Red leather trim.

Driving the SC

Driving Impressions The SC 430 remains stable and balanced during most driving exercises, yet still remembers its luxury-car roots. The steering exhibits good on-center feel and response in the corners, and ordinary...

twists and turns are no problem for the SC 430. With the top down and stereo cranked up, you could spend hours traversing the winding back roads that lead home. With the top up, the SC 430's interior is a pleasant reprieve from the usual wind rush and air leaks that accompany more traditional soft-top convertible designs.

The SC 430's 4.3-liter V8 produces a healthy 288 horsepower—enough power to move the SC from zero to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. The six-speed sequential-shift automatic is the only transmission available and does an excellent job of handling the SC 430's power.

Lexus uses generous helpings of either Walnut or Espresso to contrast with the SC 430's instrument panel and seating materials. The effect is eye-catching, to say the least. A set of wide bucket seats is among the most comfortable we've found in any class, though we must admit the rear seating is just short of useless. Some bits and pieces appear to have been borrowed from Toyota, somewhat diminishing an otherwise brilliant interior design. The SC 430's small trunk becomes considerably smaller with the top retracted. Lexus, however, is proud of the 9.4-cubic feet possible when outfitted with the optional run-flat tires, which remove the spare from the trunk.

Exterior
2007 Lexus SC photo

Seven years ago, Lexus sent its design team to the French Riviera, to observe how the other half lives, plays and dresses. From these observations Lexus created the SC 430, a classic hardtop convertible that distinguishes itself in many ways. Its look is a sophisticated blend of curvaceous lines, carefully-placed chrome trim and stylized headlamp and taillight treatments that all work together to create a form that appears to have been carved from a single block of steel.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The SC 430 features a 4.3-liter V8 engine, six-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission, power-retractable hardtop roof, automatic air conditioning, illuminated keyless entry, fog lights, garage door opener, HID headlamps with washers, dual-heated power mirrors with auto-dimming feature, DVD navigation, front side-impact airbags, driver and passenger knee airbags, heated leather seats, cruise control, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, tire pressure monitor, Vehicle Stability Control, traction control and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Optional Equipment

Options include the Pebble Beach Edition, Lexus Link, run-flat tires and a rear spoiler.

Under the Hood

The 4.3-liter V8 won't disappoint anyone except perhaps the most hardened performance enthusiast. It's supremely smooth at idle and quick as a flashbulb when set loose, and is exactly why Lexus engineering is held in such high regard.

Pros: "fun to drive TOP-Less!! with lexus quality"

Cons: "radio cover trim stuck."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I have owned my 2005 SC430 for 5 months now. I bought her used with 95K miles on odometer. Even thou She has alot of miles already, I am a true believer in the Lexus reliability and quality. I have had many Lexus vehicles in the past. I found her in excellent condition with white exterior and saddle interior. The engine is still strong (V8) and the Wheels were updated to the 2010 Lexus SC430 18" instead of the ugly covered wheels from early models. The ride is smooth and comfortable. Also, I love the wood trim that flows around the dash and center console. My SC430 is my weekend car. I try to put the top down as often as I get a chance to, whether it is cold or at nights. Many times over, I get compliments whether on the street,at stop signs/lights and gas stations. Only compliant I have is the sliding cover over the radio is stuck and doesn't come down. (But heck, it was already like that when I bought it.) not a deal breaker at all."

absolutely beautiful!

"This car is my dream car. Unfortunately my work schedule, out of country, out of state did not allow me to enjoy it much. I have recently retired and relocated. This car is no longer practical for me. This car has less than 23,000 actual miles. It is pristine."

"No one believes my SC430 is 13 years old and over 200K on the odometer. The paint job is amazing and the car looks pretty new. Only major repair has been both front wheel bearings. Besides the hideous stock wheels and stock run flats which I replaced; this car is like a reliable girl friend. I put two inch wider wheels on the back and it really changes the stance and appearance of the car. Very bulletproof vehicle for those that like understated luxury and reliability over unusable performance."

Pros: "Great quality and style. nice touring car."

Cons: "Run flat tires"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"I have truly enjoyed this car. Quality is outstanding. It is not a true sports car. It is more luxury than sport. Top up or down it is fun to drive. Styling is unique. I enjoy that I don't see many on the road. There are however two negatives. The trunk is useless with the top down. Don't hit a pot hole, the run flat tires are a disaster."

"It is a luxury car and handles as such, kind of mushy in the corners. But, it will get up and go, and comfortably. Always have the top down, weather permitting. Love this car."
