"If you are looking for a vintage no-frills on/off road vehicle and: you want superior drivability and space, look at the classic G Wagon; you want superior reliability and efficiency, look at the classic Land Cruiser; you want superior support and performance, look for the classic Bronco/Scout/Jeep/Hummer. You can't go wrong. The communities around those vehicles are really awesome too. However, if you want a tough as nails, honest, unique, simple, fun, cool, good looking, reliable (mine is) transportation... the Defender is the shizzle. I love mine and would drive it anywhere at any time on any surface in any weather. My girlfriend loves to go anywhere in it. My shepherd considers it HIS (when I let him out of the house for any reason he runs, sits next to it and wags his tail) and gets mad if I take it somewhere without him. I can drive her in Beverly Hills or Glassell Park and people want to talk about her. She bridges all socio-economic differences and makes friends with almost everyone. Best yet, Prius drivers hate it. Best advice: Know what you are getting in to. Maintain a Defender and you have to try really hard to hurt it. And that is the key with any vehicle of this vintage... maintenance. Get your hands dirty (cheap) or be ready to pay someone to do it (expensive). In short, if you are willing to put the time in, a Defender will reward you exponentially. If you aren't, stop looking at any vehicle of this vintage or type. It is not for everybody..."
