Although Nissan execs say the official corporate position regarding ownership of the advanced lithium-ion manganese battery modules that will power the upcoming LEAF EV remains in work in process, Chairman Carlos Ghosn has apparently made up his own mind. We spoke with him about clarifying that issue at a gathering here in Los Angeles being held to kick off the three-month cross-country preview tour for Nissan's advanced EV that ultimately will visit 22 cities in 11 states, the District of Columbia and Vancouver, Canada. Asked point blank, the man in charge responded: "The lease is a done deal. I would not accept selling the battery. Period." Those sentiments add even stronger emphasis to comments he expressed earlier in the day at a formal press...
Although the accompanying press release was palpably light on specifics, Nissan has released this concept sketch of a future all-electric variation of its new conventionally-powered NV200 commercial van that just went on sale in various world markets and will be heading to the U.S. next year. Unlike its baseline counterpart, the NV200 EV is destined to get its own unique styling that's heavily influenced by Nissan's LEAF EV, which will also arrive at dealers here sometime in late 2010. While the automaker didn't confirm any powertrain details, it's expected the NV200 EV's motivation will come from some variation of the basic battery-electric package used in the LEAF, an 80kW (108 hp) electric motor powered by an advanced compact Lithium-ion battery...
Nissan Motors and the Sumitomo Corporation have joined forces to undertake a feasibility study for an innovative and forward-thinking business venture aimed at capitalizing on tomorrow's potential market in used battery packs from electric vehicles. This "4R" plan -- for Reuse, Resell, Refabricate and Recycle -- will focus on developing new -- and profitable -- ways to both protect the environment and create new energy-storage solutions for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries that have come to the end of their initial service life in cars. While the current state of the EV business has yet to generate much in the way of "feedstock," the firms feel that by 2020, the demand for "second-life" batteries in Japan alone will be the equivalent of 50,000 EVs per...
Confirming longstanding rumors, Infiniti says it will indeed launch a hybrid version of its upcoming 2011 M35 sedan. The M35 Hybrid will go on sale about 12 months after its all-new conventional counterpart hits the showrooms in early 2010. In addition to being the luxury division's first gas/electric offering, the M35 Hybrid also promises to be the cleanest and most fuel-efficient model in its 20 year history. This trick variation on the standard M35 uses a hybrid system developed by Infiniti that pairs a specially tuned version of the naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter gasoline V6 with a single electric motor/generator and twin clutch elements, all of which act on a single driveshaft. The first of these clutches is positioned between the engine and the...
Following inquires from nearly 22,000 interested parties, Nissan has announced it will begin taking reservations for its LEAF electric vehicle starting in the spring of 2010. According to Carlos Tavares, head of Nissan's operations in North, Central and South America, "Our goal is to confirm at least 20,000 reservations for Nissan LEAF by the time we deliver the world's first mass-market zero-emission car in late 2010." Nissan says that among the individuals who have already responded to the initial publicity about the LEAF, half indicated that they would like to have one as soon as possible and another 45 percent said they expected to own an EV sometime within the next two years. By no small coincidence, the areas where the greatest consumer...
