Mercedes-Benz Prepping a Plug-in S-Class
Moving one step beyond its newly launched S400 HYBRID, Mercedes-Benz will show an S-Class concept in Frankfurt called the Vision S500 Plug-in HYBRID. Although describing the technology it embodies as being "near-series production," M-B has yet to confirm when it might actually turn up in a showroom. However, Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG with responsibility for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, did note that: "We've already got all the key technology we need for such a dream car, which is why I see it being included in the next generation of the S-Class. The important thing now is that our development work be accompanied by the establishment of a full-coverage infrastructure that will allow the...

Mercedes Shows Plug-in Hybrid Version of BlueZERO E-CELL Concept
The one car missing from Mercedes-Benz' original BlueZERO invasion at this year's Detroit Auto Show has finally broken cover on its way to Frankfurt. Called the BlueZERO E-CELL Plus, it's a concept vehicle Mercedes repeatedly refers to in its press release as being "near-series." This "Plus" variant takes up where the E-CELL left off, adding a range-extending three-cylinder 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine to replenish the advanced liquid-cooled Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack that provides energy to its 136-horsepower electric motor. That upgrade increases the range of the E-CELL Plus to 600 km (372 mi) and allows this compact front-driver to operate in zero-emission pure-electric mode for up to 100 km (62 mi). For the record, that's triple...

Mercedes-Benz Will Launch B-Class Fuel-Cell Car Here in 2010
Mercedes confirmed today that it will put its first fuel-cell powered vehicle into series production by the end of 2009. The automaker also said it will offer a limited number of these zero-emissions B-Class F-CELL models to customers in America starting in mid-2010, although whether that will be done under a sale or lease agreement is still being determined. In either case, initial production of the B-Class F-CELL will be limited to about 200 total vehicles for both the European and U.S. markets. Based on M-B's production B-Class compact crossover, this new F-CELL variant reacts high-pressure hydrogen with atmospheric oxygen to create electricity for an electric motor that develops 134 horsepower and 214 lb.-ft of peak torque. A 1.4kWH...

Ilmor Engineering Creates Experimental Five-Stroke Engine
Famed race-engine design house, Ilmor Engineering, has shown an innovative take on the conventional gasoline engine that incorporates a unique fifth stroke to its operating cycle. It's a twist that Ilmor claims can add 5-20 percent more efficiency while using 100 percent of today's existing technology. The test engine is a 700cc turbocharged inline three-cylinder with two normally configured high-pressure cylinders flanking a low-pressure center cylinder that is activated by pressures from the spent exhaust gases. Ilmor says that by decoupling the compression/expansion processes, the engine can operate in a near-diesel type of environment, creating an effective compression ratio of 14.5:1 while benefitting from significant reductions in pumping...

Mercedes Will Build EV Version of SLS AMG Gullwing Coupe
Surprisingly forthcoming with details about its next-gen Gullwing supercoupe, Mercedes-Benz has now confirmed that it also plans to build an all-electric version of the stunning SLS AMG. Unlike its conventional sibling, which will be fitted with a 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline-fueled V8 that makes 571 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, this eDrive variant will corral 526 horses but develop a tarmac-churning 649 lb.-ft of torque. Mercedes says in its current "pilot stage," this zero-emissions stormer is fitted with a 400-volt liquid-cooled, tri-module lithium-ion battery that has 48 kilowatt hours of energy content, a 40 amp-hour capacity and uses regenerative braking for on-the-fly recharging. The rest of the package consists of an...
