Joined by Vice President Joe Biden and Delaware's Governor Jack Markell, fledgling plug-in hybrid entrepreneur Henrik Fisker announced that his firm has signed a letter of intent to purchase the shuttered GM assembly plant in Wilmington for $18 million and turn it into the new home of Fisker Automotive's Project NINA. When an additional $175 million in modifications and upgrades are completed, the facility will turn out a new line of more affordable mainstream plug-in hybrid sedans to complement the high-profile Karma luxury model that will be made by Valmet in Finland and go on sale here next summer. Fisker says the still-unnamed Project NINA vehicle, which is due to start production sometime in 2012, will cost under $40,000 after federal tax...
General Motors has launched a contest to help determine what it will call the "signature" exterior color of the new Chevrolet Volt when the car goes on sale late next year. GM describes the paint -- which will be exclusive to the Volt -- as "silver with an emerald hue," and is asking the public to suggest a fitting name that will round out an exterior palette that already includes Black, Silver Ice Metallic, Cyber Gray Metallic, Crystal Red Metallic and a premium White Diamond Tri-Coat. Full details regarding the competition can be found at chevroletvoltage.com, but the basics call for entries to be accepted from now until the morning of November 4, at which time a team at Chevy will pick three finalists. According to Maria Rohrer, director of...
Coskata, one of the leading producers of the next-generation of biofuels made from non-foodstock sources, has taken one more step towards bringing its vision of a sustainable "cellulosic" future to reality by opening its new Project Lighthouse facility outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. According to Bill Roe, president and CEO of Coskata, "This facility is demonstrating that our efficient, affordable and flexible conversion technology is ready for commercialization. The next step is to build full-scale facilities and begin licensing our technology to project developers, project financiers and strategic partners." One of those key strategic partners is General Motors, which is already receiving and evaluating biofuel from Project Lighthouse. GM,...
Shortly after announcing that its Project Driveway test fleet of fuel cell-powered Chevy Equinoxes had passed the million-mile evaluation benchmark, General Motors took the wraps off of its new Gen 2 hydrogen fuel cell system. Designed by GM, this updated package is half the size, requires 50 percent less precious metals to construct, and is 220 pounds lighter than the hardware currently in use. Now shrunk to roughly the same dimensions as a conventional four-cylinder gasoline engine, the system is based around GM's fifth-generation fuel cell "stack," a core element the automaker thinks could be commercialized as early as 2015. According to Charles Freese, executive director of GM Fuel Cell Activities, "Hardware mechanization has been dramatically...
The largest real-world demonstration of automotive fuel-cell technology passed another milestone last week when General Motors announced that its fleet of hydrogen-powered Chevrolet Equinox SUVs participating in the "Project Driveway" program eclipsed the million-mile mark. Since Project Driveway began in November, 2007, nearly 5,000 people have spent time behind the wheel of these zero-emission vehicles, from individuals to government entities -- including the U.S. Postal service which has used them to deliver over 700,000 pieces of mail -- to mega-corporations like Disney and Virgin Atlantic. Project Driveway participants generally get to keep these midsize Equinox crossovers for about two months during which time they receive free fuel and...
