Feds Greenlight Funding Aid For Mileage-Maxing Three-Wheelers
This week, President Obama signed a bill that makes fuel-efficient three-wheeled vehicles eligible for supplemental development assistance through loans from the Department of Energy (DOE). Prior to its passage, only manufacturers of four-wheeled vehicles qualified for consideration to get a chunk of the $25 billion available under provisions of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program (ATVMIP). Terms of this new legislation -- which specifically came in the form of an amendment authored by Representative Brian Bilbray (R-California) and Representative Adam Schiff (D-California) attached to a previously passed energy appropriations bill -- extend consideration to include all "fully enclosed vehicles that are capable of...

Mazda Shoots For the Sky With its Next-Gen Powertrains
Offering an early look at what we'll see in Tokyo next month, Mazda has revealed its "SKY" line of advanced engine and transmission designs that will highlight its "Technologies of Tomorrow" display. While reserving some details on the hardware, the automaker did confirm that both the new SKY-G gasoline engine and the SKY-D clean diesel will play fundamental roles in moving Mazda significantly closer to its goal of improving the average fuel economy of the vehicles its sells globally some 30 percent by 2015. Both engines feature numerous design tweaks that help lower internal friction and improve thermal efficiency. The 2.0-liter SKY-G four combines advanced direct fuel-injection and variable valve timing to raise torque and mpg by about 15 percent...

Hyundai Goes Greener With 2010 Elantra Blue Model
While the rest of the Elantra lineup hardly falls into the gas-guzzler realm, Kia is bolstering its econo push for 2010 with the introduction of a new "Blue" model. In addition to being the most fuel efficient member of the family -- EPA stats on its 2.0-liter engine rise from 24 to 26 mpg in the city and 33 to 35 mpg on the highway -- it's also the lowest priced Elantra, opening at just $14,865. However that figure does include one caveat: this econo-runner is only available with a five-speed manual transmission. Functionally, the 2010 Elantra Blue gets a new "smart" alternator management system, lower-friction engine internals, revised electronic control calibrations, reshuffled transmission ratios and a new shift indicator dash readout. Visual...

GM's Next Six-Speed Autoshifter Promises Five-Percent Better MPG
While the current-generation of GM's Hydra-Matic 6T40 automatic transmission (pictured here) does a most impressive job of enhancing the mileage-maxing potential of compact and mid-size vehicles, The General's powertrain engineers are already well along in the development of a new and improved 6T40 family that it anticipates will bump the transmission's overall operating efficiency by an additional five percent. According to GM, up to 60 percent of that extra gain will come from adopting even more precise control of the computer-programming side of the equation. The remaining 40 percent will be generated by improving the design of various hydraulic-related internal components like the main valve body, friction plates and variable-flow solenoid,...
