2010 Detroit Auto Show to Feature "Electric Avenue" Display Area

Already primed for a major bounce back from last year's manufacturer-light gathering, organizers of the North American International Auto Show have announced plans to showcase the burgeoning crop of battery-powered vehicles in a special display area that will be called "Electric Avenue." To be situated on the main floor of the exhibition, Electric Avenue is intended to present current as well as concept EV offerings from established automakers as well as offer the opportunity for smaller-scale and even startup builders of zero-emissions models to show their vehicles in a well-publicized, high-traffic area. Mazda Shoots For the Sky With its Next-Gen Powertrains

Offering an early look at what we'll see in Tokyo next month, Mazda has revealed its "SKY" line of advanced engine and transmission designs that will highlight its "Technologies of Tomorrow" display. While reserving some details on the hardware, the automaker did confirm that both the new SKY-G gasoline engine and the SKY-D clean diesel will play fundamental roles in moving Mazda significantly closer to its goal of improving the average fuel economy of the vehicles its sells globally some 30 percent by 2015. Both engines feature numerous design tweaks that help lower internal friction and improve thermal efficiency. Honda Reinvents the Wheel -- Just For You

Set for its public debut at the Toyko Motor Show next month, Honda has created a new "personal mobility device" it calls the UX-3. Using proprietary balance control technology developed as part of the firm's ongoing research with its amazingly anthropomorphic ASIMO robot, the single-wheeled UX-3 permits a rider to move in any direction -- forward, back, side-to-side or diagonally -- and to adjust speed simply by using body motion. GM Shows Smaller, Lighter and Cheaper Gen 2 Fuel Cell Setup

Shortly after announcing that its Project Driveway test fleet of fuel cell-powered Chevy Equinoxes had passed the million-mile evaluation benchmark, General Motors took the wraps off of its new Gen 2 hydrogen fuel cell system. Designed by GM, this updated package is half the size, requires 50 percent less precious metals to construct, and is 220 pounds lighter than the hardware currently in use. Now shrunk to roughly the same dimensions as a conventional four-cylinder gasoline engine, the system is based around GM's fifth-generation fuel cell "stack," a core element the automaker thinks could be commercialized as early as 2015. 2010 Dakar Rally to Add Ethanol Category

In a nod to the rising importance of alternative fuels in motorsport, organizers of the world's largest rally event have announced plans to add a new Ethanol Category to the competition for 2010. The change came as the result of a request from Brazilian driver Klever Kolberg, who will be the first to drive an ethanol-fueled vehicle in the grueling two-week long event. His Brazilian-built Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will have the backing of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA).
