What can you say about a car that is as popular today as it was when it first went on sale over ten years ago; a car that has had only one major redesign and yet still remains true to the spirit of the original. If you were one of the many manufacturers trying to sell cars in the U.S., you might say that a car like that is worth its weight in gold; if you were Mazda, you'd say it's called the Miata.

The Miata is available in two trim levels—base and LS. New for 2002 are two Special Edition models (SE) available only in Titanium Gray and Blazing Yellow Mica. The SE models also feature special wheels and for the first time in the Miata's history, a black leather interior. All Miatas are powered by a peppy, 1.8-liter engine producing 142-horsepower. Power windows and mirrors are standard, as is air conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels and a leather-wrapped Nardi steering wheel. The LS model adds cruise control, larger wheels, power door locks, a limited-slip differential, keyless entry and a 200- watt Bose sound system that can overpower even the most unruly wind.

On the road, the Miata is a blast to drive. Tug hard at the steering wheel and the Miata responds with a lightning fast directional change. Press hard on the brakes, and marvel how quickly the Miata comes to a level stop, even without the assistance of the optional anti-lock brakes. Acceleration from a standing start is not the Miata's strongest point, but once you get going, the willing engine moves the Miata with ease. For those who really love to shift gears, the LS model features a slick 6-speed gear box.
