UDRI Engineers Create First Solid-State Lithium-Air Battery

A team at the prestigious University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) has designed a new kind of rechargeable Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that it claims eliminates the potential overheating problems that can affect conventional Li-ion cells. The achievement, chronicled in the 2010 Issue 1 of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society, opens the door to much broader and safer implementation of Li-ion battery packs throughout all facets of industry, and has particularly critical implications for future automotive and aerospace applications. Latest Update Confirms Volt Progress on Track and On Schedule

With its on-sale date barely a year away, a recent briefing by the tech team in charge of developing the Chevrolet Volt E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) indicates that things are moving along at an impressive and very encouraging clip. Chief Engineer Andrew Farah confirmed that 80 pre-production vehicles have been built and over 250,000 evaluation miles have been run up on this groundbreaking plug-in hybrid that encompassed everything from hot testing in Death Valley to runs up Pikes Peak as well as a 65-percent calibration drive.
