Jeep History

Though Jeeps are viewed largely as capable family vehicles and off-road toys for many, the brand's history is tied directly to the military. Specifically, the idea behind this versatile vehicle hatched in the minds of U.S. Army officials who went to the auto industry in search of a four-wheel-drive rig that would serve the troops in the field during World War II. That path led to the creation of Jeep, and in 1945 the first Jeep CJ was introduced. The CJ soldiered on until it was replaced by the Jeep Wrangler in 1987.

During the reign of the Jeep CJ, the brand was expanding with new models such as the Jeep Wagoneer. This large Jeep SUV led to development of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, the Jeep Cherokee, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and more recently, the Jeep Commander.

Looking ahead, the face of Jeep is sure to evolve, though more dramatic changes might be in store under the skin, including a Bluetec diesel engine shown in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Renegade concept.
