2011 Infiniti G Review

Infiniti's G Sedan was the first Japanese luxury car that could truly compete with the best European compact and mid-size luxury performance sedans. This statement still holds true today, which is why the 2011 Infiniti G37 sedan remains one of our favorite four-door rides. The G37's combination of performance (it's powered by the same engine found in the Nissan 370Z sport coupe), luxury and price give it a leg up on models such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series, as well as domestics such as the Cadillac CTS and Lincoln MKZ. Toss in the G37's impressive safety, reliability and resale value, and it's hard to make an argument against Infiniti's sales leader.

You'll Like This Car If...

Those who don't think you should have to sacrifice a comfortable ride or creature comforts in order to enjoy exhilarating performance and handling will be quite happy behind the wheel of a G Sedan.

You May Not Like This Car If...

Whether real or imagined, loyal European sedan zealots will somehow find issues with the way the G37 and G25 perform. Those willing to give up rear-seat legroom and a lot more of their hard-earned cash may find more to like in an Audi RS4 or BMW M3.

What's Significant About This Car?

For 2011, Infiniti adds a new, lower-priced G25 to the lineup. The G25 is powered by a 2.5-liter V6 engine developing 218 horsepower and features a seven-speed automatic transmission. Offered in three trims, the addition of the G25 model to the exiting G37 lineup makes for a total of eight trims from which to choose.

Driving the G

Driving Impressions Derived from a long-wheelbase version of Nissan's latest FM (Front Mid-ship) platform, the G37 possesses dynamic performance credentials that only improve when coupled with the G37 Sport Package. Under normal...

driving conditions, the G37 sedan pampers its occupants with a host of electronic goodies and a smooth ride that is never harsh or jarring. Drive it enthusiastically, and the G37 satisfies like few competitors can. Its tenacious 3.7-liter V6 pulls strongly on demand, whether backed by the seven-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. All variants benefit from a driver-selectable Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system that lets you explore an ample portion of the car's ultimate potential before the system swings into action. Those willing to forego a bit of at-the-limit edge for the all-season security of all-wheel drive should consider a G37x. On a G37 fitted with the Sport Package, the automatic also features steering column-mounted shift paddles that are ideally positioned for quick gear changes.

Power front seats
Amazingly comfortable and supportive, even the base G37's front seats boast eight-way power adjustment for the driver and passenger, plus manually-adjustable lumbar supports. The Sport 6MT seats include power activation for the thigh, lumbar and side bolsters.

Hard Drive Navigation
This all-in-one information center not only offers voice-activated navigation, it includes satellite radio-linked traffic and weather updates, Zagat restaurant guide, streaming Bluetooth for audio, 9.3-gigabyte music box storage and DVD playback capability.

2011 Infiniti G Details
Interior

The 2011 G37's interior is wrapped in soft leather and warm wood, pampering every sense in a cocoon of luxury and elegance. Supremely comfortable form-fitting leather-clad front seats are a welcome addition, as is the available aluminum trim textured to resemble handmade Japanese paper. While some might find the G37's cockpit somewhat busy, the soothing white on black gauges and large, easily identifiable controls are logically arranged and are within clear view. The one area of exception might be the center stack that, with or without navigation, is sometimes susceptible to varying degrees of sunlight.

Exterior

The 2011 Infiniti G37 and G25 Sedans are wrapped in a well-tailored suit of sleek sheetmetal, adorned with just the right amount of chrome trim and subtle body extensions as to avoid looking over-styled. Infiniti's distinctive grille is comprised of four sculpted bars that twist from center to edge mimicking an ancient Japanese sword blade. The front end treatment is finished off with a set of large L-shaped headlamps and lower fog lights, while the rear displays oversized tail lights that follow the flowing contours of the car's rear fenders. G25 and G37 trims ride on stylish 17-inch alloy wheels, while the top-line G37S Sport 6MT and G37x models have W-rated 225/50 front and 245/45 rear tires on 18-inch alloy rims.

Standard Equipment

Exceptionally well-appointed, even the base 2011 G Sedan offers leather upholstery, a full range of power assists – including an eight-way power driver's and four-way power passenger seat - steering-wheel-mounted supplemental audio and cruise controls, Intelligent Key remote entry and push-button start, six-speaker AM/FM/MP3-capable audio with auxiliary input, automatic air conditioning and high-intensity-discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlights. The Journey, x and G37S Sport 6MT bring Infiniti's RearView Monitor, eight-way power passenger seat, Bluetooth hand-free phone connectivity, heated outside mirrors, a USB connection port and other detail upgrades. Standard safety features on all include front, front-side and side-curtain airbags, active front-seat head restraints, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with stability and traction control and anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).

Optional Equipment

The 2011 Infiniti G25 has only a few options such as a power sunroof and rear decklid spoiler. The G37 offers multiple upgrade packages and several individual extras, although only for the Journey, G37x or G37 Sport 6MT models. Key groups include the Premium Package (moonroof, Bose audio system, power tilt and telescoping steering column and more); Sport Package (sport seats, four-piston sport brakes, unique front fascia and side sills, 18-inch wheels and tires, limited-slip differential and magnesium paddle shifters with the automatic); Technology Package (Intelligent Cruise Control, rain-sensing wipers and more); and the Navigation Package (voice-activation, real-time XM NavTraffic, Lane Guidance and a 9.3GB Music Box hard drive). Also available are Maple accent interior trim and a rear spoiler.

Under the Hood

The G25 is fitted with a 2.5-liter V6 engine and seven-speed automatic transmission. The G37's stellar V6 is the latest iteration of Nissan's renowned VQ35-series engine. This all-aluminum 3.7-liter is loaded with design elements that help reduce internal friction and increase total performance, including continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust valves. It delivers a stout 328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, is matched with either a seven-speed automatic (G37, G37 Journey or G37x) or close-ratio six-speed manual transmission (G37S Sport 6MT) and returns slightly above-average fuel economy numbers.

"Overall this vehicle is a good vehicle but falls well short of its predecessor the 2003 G35 sedan I owned. The drive by wire system hesitates both off the line and during acceleration unlike its cable driven predecessor, this hesitation removes the all the fun from the driving experience. I’ve also had the opportunity to drive loaner cars of the same year and they’ve performed the same. A constant buck during transmission shifts also make this vehicle less than appealing unlike its predecessor. The interior is quiet but not quiet enough and a stubborn unfriendly navigation system that can’t be programmed while the vehicle is in motion except through speaking to it doesn’t lend to a good experience. The navigation system always requires you to select a state and city when voice programming and you cannot set defaults; you also can not simply state the name of a place such as a common retailer, this makes the system cumbersome to use. The car sits too low to the ground for a luxury sedan, and there are other caveats missing such as a dedicated passenger side power outlet which its predecessor the G35 also possessed. The headrest is also uncomfortable forcing you to tilt your head forward. Voice quality via the bluetooth is subpar, parties on the other end state voice sounds hollow. There’s just enough road feel transmitted to the steering wheel to make you feel like you’re one with the vehicle, handling is top notch as well as fit and finish. Audiophiles sound superb from phone to car’s speakers via bluetooth, there’s no need to plug your phone in but you can."

"The G37S has some real positives: It is quick & fun to drive. The hardtop convertible is-an engineering marvel. However, the "back seat" is useless. It's virtually a two seater car. No adult, or even a child, would be comfortable in the back. It's difficult to access. To stow groceries & cargo one basically has to put the top down to get to the back seat. With the top down, the car looks awesome, but then there is no cargo space other than the back seat. Also factory tires need replacing after fewer than 25,000-not acceptable. Resale is not great."

"I purchased my new 2013 G37x in the summer of 2014. Its a great car and a lot of fun, but I have experienced numerous interior noises that makes me question the quality of the interior. Every day, I hear small pops and rattles like panels are not aligned. I have had it in the shop numerous times and the technician agrees that they can hear the noises, however, they claim that it is within the level of acceptability. For my next car, I would sacrifice horsepower for a higher quality interior."

"My son bought one and I took it on a 3 day trip. I was so amazed with his G37XS that I came back and bought my wife the exact same car. I wanted a car to handle the snowy hills in our area of PA and be fun to drive. Infiniti nailed it with the G37XS. In the S trim the seats are very supporting and comfortable. The fun factor in driving is what I really love. The handling and acceleration is better than anything in its price range. I have driven everything that is in its category and for the price you cannot beat it. The TL-SHAWD is pretty close. Others like the BMW and Audi are too expensive especially with all the options like the G37XS has. My only disappointment was the S model brakes and suspension are dropped when you have AWD (X model). I have tracked the car once and the brakes and suspension are not up to the task. The motor is excellent though. My wife loves the car too. Always brags about the take off when merging or pulling away at stop lights."

"I was hesitant to go back to a sedan after driving an SUV for over 20 years. So when I went looking for a new vehicle I still didn't know I would end up with a sedan. The moment I drove the Infiniti G37 I was sold. The smooth ride and the way it holds the corners was awesome. Then the power behind the car was pleasantly surprising and impressive. As a 49 year old woman, I never understood why guys would be obsessed about cars, but now I get it! I love my Infiniti GX37. It's sporty looking, yet classy, and has all the functionality I need with the exception of remote start. I'm still looking to find somewhere to install one. This is definitely my very favorite car I've ever owned. The one negative, lack of back seat space, but since my kids are driving their own vehicles now, it's not that big of a deal."
