KBB Expert Review

KBB Editors' Overview

By Editors - Updated Date: 10/21/2013

The Hyundai Tucson compact crossover SUV for 2014 stacks up admirably when compared to such well-established names as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. To compete, Hyundai equips the Tucson with cutting-edge engine technology, stand-out styling and a long list of standard and available equipment. It does all this with an impressively competitive window sticker and an unrivaled 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. You can choose front-wheel drive (FWD) or opt for a part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Strong resale values also help make the Tucson a viable option, but its smaller cargo area and somewhat firm ride might be two areas worth exploring before you sign on the dotted line.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you like the expressive styling of a sports car but need the AWD capability and cargo-hauling space provided by a compact SUV, check out the 2014 Hyundai Tucson. Well-equipped and reasonably priced, the Tucson's 10-year/100,000-mile warranty is just icing on the cake.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you like your cars open and airy, the Tucson's small windows and cramped rear quarters will likely push you toward a Subaru Forester, which also gets better gas mileage. Those seeking a softer ride might find the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 a bit more accommodating.

What's New for 2014

The 2014 Hyundai Tucson adds direct-injection technology to its two engine choices. New standard features include Bluetooth, tilt/telescopic steering column and reclining rear seats. SE trims get a 4.3-inch LCD touch-screen radio with rearview camera, while Limited trims receive Blue Link telematics.

Driving It Driving Impressions

Responsive handling and a firm suspension make the 2014 Hyundai Tucson a pleasure when driving aggressively on all types of roads. In small spaces, the Tucson's compact size and tight turning radius make it easy to maneuver, although the narrow rear quarter windows create noticeable blind spots when changing lanes. Acceleration is best with the 2.4-liter engine that delivers power on par with the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, but lags a bit behind the Subaru Forester XT and VW Tiguan. We found the Tucson's 6-speed automatic shifted smoothly and was fairly responsive to manual input. The Tucson's engines are not the quietest we've tested and can become downright rude under hard acceleration. Ride comfort is another area where the Tucson takes a backseat to the CR-V and Forester, which both offer a less jarring response to rough-road conditions.

Favorite Features

Hyundai continues its "value-pricing" philosophy with the 2014 Hyundai Tucson, offering well-equipped vehicles for less money than the competition, as well as an ability to maintain its value over time.

The 2014 Tucson's sculpted exterior shape still looks fresh after three years on the market and stands out among the crowd.
