Cons: "tranmission is sensitive, power steering squeals"

"We bought this car used in 2012 with 71000 miles on it. The important items were maintained well. It had new tires, and the engine was serviced per the recommended schedule, with the exception of the spark plugs and wires. I replaced those myself. The problems I have had with this car have been mostly related to rust, especially this year (2014). The winter of 2013-14 was one of the worst we've had in decades, and as a result plenty of salt and beet juice was spread on the road. I've been springing leaks all over the car as a result. I've had both CV axles replaced because the boots began leaking. The shop also ran me new brake lines to the rear. I did the front struts, power steering pressure line, and most of the fuel lines myself. The car's transmission is also very sensitive to electrical-related activities. If you unhook the battery, make sure you fully discharge the capacitors in the vehicle by turning the key on and depressing the brake slowly. Then, do not reconnect the power for at least 5 minutes. Otherwise, the car may shift funny for a period of time afterwards. For DIY folks like me, this car is easy to work on and most repairs at home I've found can be done in less than 2 hours. The car also has chronic squealing issues with the power steering. The manual makes note that it is not unusual to get some noise from the power steering, and I've read that adjusting the belt tension sometimes fixes the problem. The shop said my tension was correct and I could try applying belt dressing, but I'm not worrying about it. Despite all of these issues, many of them simply due to environmental factors (i.e. salt/beet juice during winter months), the car has been very reliable. It has never stranded me anywhere and gets great gas mileage, especially in warmer weather where I have reached 38 MPG. It does dip down to 22 in the winter, but that's due to the poor gas quality and often difficult travel conditions. I would recommend this car for people who are looking for a reliable commuter car, despite it's transmission and power steering oddities, but I would caution them that given the age of this model, rust could be an issue for them as well."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 114,000overall rating 1 of 10rating details
Pros: "good on gas, smooth ride"
Cons: "costly constant repairs, junk car"

"I am the original owner, I bought this 2001 elantra gls brand new this was my 1st brand new car,and all my previous vehicles were used, but I had more problems with this when it was new than I ever had with any of my used cars I purchased, I will never buy another one ever. Once the warranty is up you are in big trouble this has been in the shop for repairs more than usual and very costly, while this was under bumper to bumper warranty the radiator was replaced twice within 6-8 months. I have always kept the car very well maintained and serviced but it has always been a money pit from the beginning. The paint bubbled up near the rear wheels on both sides and I was told by a mechanic that they all seem to rust in that same spot, I got that rust repaired twice since I have had this car, and the bottom is rusting now. Save yourself money problems do not buy this car. The ride is smooth and is good on gas but costly with repairs."

"This car is very reliable, but it lacks power! I had a 1995 mazda mx6 that was a manual like my hyundai elantra which is a 2003, and it had much more power than this car."

Pros: "Most reliable, Very Low maint., great driver."
Cons: "can be a bit cramped for tall people on long drive"

"This car was so reliable it was unbelievable. Sun, rain, ice or snow this car got me from point "A" to point "B" and back without a problem. The only shop time this vehicle ever saw was for general scheduled upkeep as per the owners manual. other than this vehicle being to small for my needs now, I would keep this car and drive it until it dies."

Pros: "Amazing on gas. You can go hours without refuling."
Cons: "Didn't have the auxilary hole for my I-Pod.."

"This car has driven me across country twice from Virginia to Wyoming and back. It has driven through mountains, plains, in snow, hail, strong hurricane like winds and it is still going. Amazing and completely reliable and yes I am going to be buying another. Why spend a fortune on a big brand name vehicle when you can spend half of that and still get to where you need to go. I love it."

Pros: "Gas mileage, low maintenance, reliable"
Cons: "Road noise"

"We purchased our 2004 Elantra used in 2007, and have put nearly 60k miles on it since. It's been a great commuter car, gas mileage with careful driving running more like 33mpg. Handles well, almost sporty, with good pickup and smooth running up to about 85 mph. We've done the recommended maintenance - fluids, filters, belts - and it still runs like the day we bought it. Only negative is the amount of road noise at highway speeds, but comparable to other cars in the same class. Definitely recommend Hyundai and would buy again."
