Pros: "Low maintenance costs. Toyota parts."

Cons: "none"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"The Geo Prism is a Toyota Corolla with some minor cosmetic changes. All parts replacements I have ever done required the use of Toyota parts. I bought this '96 model used in 1998 with 29k miles on it from a dealer for exactly $10,000 including TTL. The vehicle was for my wife. She drove it until 2003 when we needed a larger family vehicle. I started driving this vehicle to work when it had just under 120K miles on it. I am now at 262K. I've driven this car on cross country trips but primarily only use it in town for work. The car does not accelerate quickly but can easily hold speed limit and traffic speeds and handles well in traffic. The car continues to average above 30 miles to the gallon and started burning just a bit of oil at around 230K. I have averaged less than $600 in maintenance in any given year. This includes normal maintenance such as oil changes, tune ups, and tires. The $600 also includes the occasional door handle replacement, engine mounts, timing belt, AC clutch, and most recently driver seat belt connection ($30) replacement."

Pros: "Economical, reliable."

Cons: "No longer being maunfactured."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This car has 285,400+ miles on it. I'm trying to take it to 300,000 miles. I think I'll make it. I love this car and will be sad to see it go. I've owned it for 20 years. Put a new and better radio and CD player in after the radio went out. It still gets 33 miles per gal. Has gotten 40 mpg before on a long highway trip. Manual transmission. I've had several things replaced in the last couple of years, but the car went for about 10 years with nearly no repairs or service. The interior still looks good. Exterior rust appeared after this past very bad winter. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if they still sold them."

Pros: "Good fuel mileage, low price, comfortable ride"

Cons: "transmission design"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I've owned this car for 3 years and over 40,00 miles, it is an excellent vehicle. I am a mechanic and would rank this as above average reliability (better than Honda) and performance, and it is much easier to work on than the majority of cars in it's era. The vehicle is manufactured by Toyota so it is nearly identical to a Toyota Corolla (engines and many parts are interchangeable). The worst flaw this vehicle has is that the some models that had the 1.6L engine have a separate differential oil compartment from the transmission (which most technicians are not aware of) so differential failures are more frequent from lack of service, which unfortunately requires transmission replacement. If the differential oil level is checked periodically then this failure will not occur. Overall this car gets good fuel mileage, has a powerful engine, handles good, and rides very nice. Cost of ownership is very low. It is a very solid car for its size and is a safe car. I have been impressed with its reliability."

"I love the Prizm I had and am trying to get another one. I absolutely loved the handling, gas mileage, and reliability! I never had problems with it till the engine dies due to a mad mechanic. Great car to own!"

Pros: "Reliability"

Cons: "trim - poor quality"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This has been an incredibly reliable car. Bought it new, when the Prizm was still essentially a Corolla with Chevy interior trim. Very few repairs it's entire life. Changed tires, oil/filter, and typical maintenance (timing belt at ~120,000, replaced other belts once, replaced plugs, wires, cap & rotor 3x in it's life) is all it's ever required. It's been a real gem. Not sporty, small 4 cyl, is slow on acceleration, but is adequate (manual version is spunkier), and that just translates to decent gas mileage. The only annoyance with this car has been some minor trim issues -- driver's lock broke early on, as did several interior dash lights (low gas) & light for shift console. As it's aged, some of air control knobs also broke."
