In its waning days, the last generation Taurus was produced strictly for rental fleets before disappearing entirely at the end of the 2006 model year. The new Taurus and Taurus X owe nothing to that car and trace their structural origins to Volvo.
When it comes to the Ford Taurus X, the name is familiar and so is the vehicle, but for different reasons. That name belonged to a car that radicalized the world of mid-size sedans and wagons when it first appeared as a 1986 model, but then declined over the years to rental fleet anonymity. The vehicle itself, meanwhile, made an all but invisible debut as the Ford Freestyle, its solid foundations clad in forgettable sheetmetal and propelled by an engine unequal to the task. But the renewed and renamed 2008 Taurus X is more than just an attempt to improve upon sluggish sales by reviving a recognizable name. Along with the new appellation comes a substantial list of significant upgrades. Offered in front- and all-wheel drive editions, the Taurus X stacks up as crossover worthy of attention.

"Just wanted to say that I am 33 year-old guy with a wife and a kid and 3 dogs, and this is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. The only drawback is that sometimes my friends poke fun and say they like my minivan. Believe me, it is way more comfortable, way more stylish, and way outperforms any minivan and even a lot of SUV's. I had a 2005 Pathfinder before this, and I am so glad I traded it. This seems to have A LOT more room on the inside than most SUV's. 3 rows of seats that can fold down, nice features on the inside, and drives great as well. I LOVE IT! Gas mileage is OK (Better than most SUV's), even on trips hauling the whole family, our Christmas stuff, and dogs. NOTE: IF YOU WANT CROSS BARS FOR THIS GO WITH 58" YAKIMA BARS and YAKIMA DOUBLECROSS OR LOWRIDER towers. They work well. Sears Sport Cargo Carrier fits well on here also. Will be loading it down this summer as we head from VA to Colorado for a mountain biking trip. Will update and let ya know how it performed, but looking forward to riding 5000 miles in style!"

"I bought my 2008 Taurus x SEL AWD used with with higher than average miles but at a great price. So far my decision was well worth it.An absolutley fantastic car/wagon that is comfortable, powerful and loaded.Perfect vehicle to load the family of 4 into with all the baggage fitting with room to spare.I bought a black one so it is a little harder than usual to keep clean.Dual temp inside is a plus and a 5 star safety rating makes me happy. One and only complaint is when the kids open just their rear windows it feels like my ears will pop because of the air build-up.A set of side rear windows at the very back that opened out (Like my wife's van) would have easily solved this. But thats the only worry. If thinking about buying one... Go for it.Enjoy"

"I have had my TaurusX for about 7 months and we love it. I have this vehicle for work but we drive it all of the time. I have had Tauruses for 7 years now and have hated every one, so I fully expected to hate this one. It has much more room then all of the others, my friend is 7 feet tall and he can ride in the front or back and he barely fit in the front of the old taurus! Third row of seats comes in handy when not hauling equipment. I am getting 21 miles to the gallon, which is great for the size. There have been many comfort and handling imrovements since the freestyle also. I think this car is what a lot of people are going to be looking for, it's great all around car and it is not a horrible looking box."
