A very good car for commuters

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 1,500

Pros: "Fun to drive, good sound system, no cheap feel."

Cons: "Lack of storage, a little pricey for a compact car"

"I commute 45 miles each way to work. I needed a car that would get good mileage and be comfortable to sit in for extended periods. The Focus is both of these and much more. I am currently averaging 37 mpg (3 fill ups so far). The front seats are very comfortable, but the driver seat lacks an adjustable lumbar support (in the SE version I own). I use a small towel roll to make up the difference. The car has plenty of power, accelerating and shifting smoothly. The audio system (6 speaker with SIRIUS) is more than adequate for the average audiophile, reproducing wonderful sound. The hand controls on the steering wheel were confusing at first, but now are very convenient and intuitive. The only ammenity that I find lacking in this car is the absence of "cubbies." I have no real good place to put all of my... goodies. The glove box is very spacious. The center console is smallish. The cup holders in front are smallish. The door panels seem to have adequate space. But that is it. Can I live with this small flaw? Absolutely. It the car a blast to drive? You're darn tootin' it is. It handles corners like more expensive BMW's or VW's. It feels substancial and refined, yet nimble. Nothing about this car seems cheep or poorly made. The two words I can say: Buy one!"

Used 2012 Focus SEL Sedan

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 38,000

Pros: "The Interior, Exterior, Radio and Exceleration."

Cons: "Nothing for 5,000 so far."

"I bought the car at the end of October. I got it used and acordding to car facts it was a rental car. I got the car at 32,400 miles and currently have 38,000. I drive 75 + miles a day 7 days a week at times and I honestly love this car. I had a 2006 Toyota Corolla prior to this car and I liked the Toyota but it always felt cramped and like I never had enough power to get on and off the highway. I have had the car for 2 months now with a lot of driving and having people in the back seat regularly. So far I have not had an issue with their not being enoughg room even though one of my friends is 6'3" and had plenty of head room. I love the SYNC system and learned it very qucikly. I do understand where people are coming from with the tranny. But I have not had any issues with it. It accelerates very nicely and has incredible brakes. I love this car and enjoy the leather seats, moon roof,SYNC and it looks like a sports car instead of a gas sipper. I plan to keep it for quite some time and I LOVE this car!!!"

An affordable car with so many good features!

"I bought the 2013 Ford Focus SE model in tuxedo black with automatic transmission. My overall initial assessment was that the car was literally packed with buttons, perhaps too many even. The Ford My Touch and Synch offer many valuable tools for the driver and connect with your phone or other devices for hands free use while driving. After starting it up and driving it I found the handling and power of this model to be superior to any other vehicle I tested in that class. I thought it was more ergonomic, fitted my 5' 10" and 217 lb body well, was responsive, nimble and just felt classy. Having done my research I knew it rated exceptionally by every testing agency, so it was not a surprise that it performed as well as it did. Compared to every other vehicle I drove in that class, the Focus was tops in my book hands down. I bought it and have put 3,000 miles on it, without any incident of note. I am more than pleased with the vehicle, and having owned many cars and trucks in my lifetime, I would have to say the Focus is in the running for being one of the best. I consider it just a fraction off of the BMW 3 series vehicle I owned, and superior in many ways to other, more exotic, cars I own. Ford hit a home run with this car, and I am very happy to own the focus."

Great MPG. Transmission is not perfect, yet.

"Pros: MPG (>42 driving from LA to SD at 65-70). Driving feels very solid, city or mountains. It handles turns, mountains very well/smooth, better than I thought. A lot of power going up hill (160hp). Its hilly-drive function button on the autoshift handle is quite easy and neat feature that I find very helpful when you go frequent from up to down and to up hills. Drive CA hwy-1 from Santa Babara to SF, the average MPG is ~37, including all the hilly area. Ex. and Int. design is a great improvement over the previous models. Very quite in regular city/hwy drive. You do hear the engine sound significantly when you step hard on the gas, e.g. going uphill. I really love it in-and-out. The build quality is pretty solid for the price. Cons: Transmission is not exactly perfect, yet. Mine is pretty good. Does not have any problem at all on flat or going downhill. However, when it goes steep uphill, it does take a bit harder on gas to get a smooth start. This is the only place I would take any point out of this beautiful little amazing car. Hope Ford can get this sorted out with a new firmware update."

2012 Ford Focus S sedan, 5-speed manual, 100A equipment package, sterling gray metallic

"I just bought the 2012 Focus S sedan, with the 5-speed manual transmission. We didn't get any of the upgrade packages to keep the cost a little lower since we were working on a bit of a budget, and I really didn't see a need for most of them anyway. The car drives and feels like something that easily 'should' cost at least $10k more. The interior is very comfortable and high quality, and the controls are intuitive to use (standard radio system and AC controls). The trunk space is surprisingly generous, much better than previous compact cars I've owned. The engine has a lot of power, and mated with the manual transmission it can be zippy and responsive, or I can short shift for fuel economy. Even with short shifting and running in 4th or 5th gear a lot, it will still pick up speed when I need it. We researched the heck out of this purchase, settling in with the Focus for the features, styling, quality, ride, and price. So far, I'm averaging well above the EPA rated 36 mpg...with my most recent fill-up at a mind-blowing 41 mpg, mostly highway. I'll see how it does in the next several tanks with more mixed driving, but I'm very impressed already. Hands-down this is the best car I've owned."

'12 Focus SEL Sedan w/Auto...in love with this car

"Brought my 2009 Focus (75,000 miles) into local dealer for scheduled maintenance at end of February, decided to poke around the lot. Found a black (new & unsold) 2012 model SEL sedan with almost every conceivable option short of keyless ignition and rain-sensing wipers. Otherwise had it all: leather, MyTouch, Sync, moonroof, 6-spd auto w/toggle shift, 17" magnesium lookalikes, rearview camera, prox sensors, mood lighting, top-end Sony audio w/subwoofer, fogs, auto-park. Sticker asked $25,680(honestly worthwhile for all the equipment), left with the car after having paid a shade over $18,000...including extended bumper-to-bumper (i drive a LOT). Only concern I had in first few days was the transmission when in "D", which seemed "creaky", as if it couldn't make up it's mind on what to do next. But as I spent more time in it, I learned the nuances. It wants to be as fuel efficient as possible, requiring a rethinking of sorts about the way you would normally drive an automatic. Becomes second nature rather quickly, and it's kinda cool considering all of that technology at play. Want to have fun? Throw it into the sport mode and hang on. Superb handling, crisp shifts. A good time in every drive, and it looks terrific."

Nice Vehicle

"I purchased this vehicle in July. I was looking for a vehicle that was good on gas. I decided on the Focus due to the looks of the vehicle and the fact I have owned several other Ford vehicles and have not had any major problems with them. I now have 3800 miles on the vehicle. I have not had any major problems with the vehicle. I like the features, comfort, ride, looks, and price of the car. The transmission does take getting use to. It is different from any car I have driven before but now I am use to it and it seems to be working fine. In fact the transmission seems to smooth out with the more miles I put on the car. I am satisfied with the car and do recommend a test drive if you are looking for a small car with good gas mileage and you can tolerate that the transmission will feel different than most cars."

Can't believe this is classified as an econemy car

"I just got this car used a couple of days ago and love it so far. I got the 2012 SEL 5 door with leather seats, moon roof, fog lamps, parking sensors and 17 inch wheels. It has taken a few days to get used too coming from a 94gand marquis. I have put about 200 miles on the car almost all of which as been city and I am currently getting 29mpg. The drive is nice and the car doesn't feel to small. As for the DCT transmission, I don't notice anything wrong with it other than some minor quirks you get with a manual transmission. For example on a hill start when you take your foot off the brake the car will roll back an inch or two, which is normal for a manual trans car. I think most of the people complaining about the transmission is people who have never driven a manual before. All in All I love this car. I am glad I got a used 2012 Focus SEL and will be looking to get a Focus ST stage 2 in the future. There is nothing economy in the new generation Focus other than the MPG."

"My family leases a 2012 Titanium Sedan, loaded and we love it. It drives very well and is quiet and smooth even at 80+ MPH! Very nice interior and our Sync system has performed as expected. Some reviews knock the automatic transmission...I cannot say ours has ANY bad or balky shifts. We get complements from people all the time about how cool it looks...we got the Yellow Blaze Metallic paint with Black 17" wheels. Our kids are under 10 yrs old so back legroom has been no concern. I love this car and will buy it when the lease is over."

Attractive, great driving car

"It's a good looking car. Has good pick up; and handles great. I'm getting 40 mpg most of the time; Once I got 42. The transmission initially was a little herky-jerky, but Ford came up with a fix for that. Took it to the dealership, and they programmed a new code for the transmission, which is now operating smoothly. Nothing to dislike so far. An attractive, fun to drive, fuel efficient car."

"I absolutely love this car! I bought a Tuxedo Black initially, but was really in love with the signature Tangerine Scream color... even though it is a little loud and showy. After racking up 6 months and 11,000 miles on the Tuxedo Black I traded it for the current. This car has nearly everything you could dream of. It's perfect for the tech-types, the racer-types, and it unique and refined enough for the semi-older driver who needs an economical play toy with a little zest under the hood. The pros are so plentiful that I could not begin the list... but the brakes are phenomenal from a safety standpoint. The only con is that there is the lack of a back-up camera, and the rear seating area is tight. Also, if you are much over 200 lbs or have wide hips, the wonderfully comfortable Recaro seats will feel a little... "confining." The racing suspension makes for rather unforgiving jolts on city streets but it very nimble and smooth on highways. Of course, if you wanted the ride of a Lincoln you'd be researching that car and not this little lightning bolt. :) This car is absolutely the one to pick if you're also considering the pricier Mazda, Subaru or Volkswagon competition. I guarantee you're gonna love the Ford. Happy Hunting!"

"I loved this car from the moment I got it, I bought it with the idea that I wouldn't have to worry about maintenance or breaking down on the side of the road since it was a brand new car. Since purchasing it I have had 3 recalls and now my power steering has gone out on it, which left me driving home from work last week struggling just to turn the wheel. I got the extended warranty, even though when I agreed to it I was thinking that if I ever had to use it then I would never buy a Ford again because why should I expect my brand new car to need this, anyways, I'm glad I purchased it now, however due to the continuous maintenance that this car has required I don't think I will purchase another one, I had a Honda for the previous 7 years, never a problem, I think that will be my next purchase, unfortunately. Like I said I really wanted to love this car and I did for the 8 months, now a year and a half later, not so much..."

"I bought my 2012 Ford Focus S Sedan in May 2012. It's a looker, very attractive, sporty style. Very smooth ride. Handling is amazing. Good pick up. I have a lighter foot than most, but still I'm averaging 42 mpg overall (!). They say it drives like a car 2 or 3 times the price, and I believe it. It's a car a driving enthusiast would enjoy. Quite pleased."

"I'll start by saying over the years I've owned various makes and models of cars. When I started looking for a new car last year, I spent a months looking and when i came across the sporty look of the Ford Focus Hatchback. I finally went and test drove it, and that's all there was, I bought it on the spot. I love the style, shape, affordability, and all the new features that come with it. I've found the Fords are the way to go when looking for an affordable car on a tight budget. I'm a very satisfied Ford owner."

"I commute in this car 160 miles a day. I have the titanium with the handling package and I can weave in and out of traffic with ease. Also with the select shift I can down shift two gears real quick when I need to over take. I avg. 42 mpg. 150 miles of that commute is stop light free highway."

Zippy little sports car!!

Focus after wheels, graphics, and stripes

"I bought this demo in September 2012 because I needed a newer, dependable car with good gas mileage to commute 60+ miles one way to work. I went to the dealer to look at the new Dodge Dart, but after not seeing one I liked my salesman (this is the 4th car I've bought from him, he knew I'd love the spoiler and the sunroof!!!) had me look at the demo he was driving. I loved the color, the sunroof, the spoiler, and the styling of the car immediately!! From the front, the car is very aggressive looking and sporty. When I got it, it had steel wheels and ugly hubcaps (it's an SFE model and had low resistance hubcaps) and no stripes or graphics like it does now. I get AWESOME gas mileage, 34MPG around town, 42MPG on long trips to Charlotte, Nashville, etc. The only drawbacks I found with this car are the factory stereo in this one wasn't SiriusXM ready and didn't sound like I wanted (so I changed the head unit to one with Bluetooth and MP3, and was SiriusXM ready, added SiriusXM, and a box with two 12s and a Rockford Fosgate amp), and on a longer trip (like Nashville) the seats are kind of uncomfortable (I'm used to the comfy, couch-like seats in my 2002 Grand Marquis), but they're fine for trips to Charlotte and back-which I do quite frequently. The sporty handling, great gas mileage and aggressive look of the car outweigh the cons in a BIG way!!! I never thought I would like a small, economy car and I always owned and drove Lincoln Town Cars or Mercury Grand Marquis (I still have one). Even though I am nearly 50 years old, I LOVE THIS SPORTY CAR!!!! I'd highly recommend this Focus to anyone!!! BTW, this is my first brand new car ever!!!"

Sleek & zooms, but transmission slips

"We really loved our focus initially. Much quicker than our SUV & gas is great. About 8 months after having it we started having problems with transmission slipping. Been to the mechanic twice & looks like we will have to go back again. Want to love the car, but the jerky ride at stop & go makes it hard."

"had this car a week. great car, although i do not like the odd things the transmission does. it shudders and acts like it slips, the dealer told me it is an entirely different kind of auto transmission and does not perform like a traditional one. we have 400 miles on it, so hopefully once the "learning curve" of the transmission is complete it will be different. at least that is what the dealer told me, other than that great car. i am 6'2 330 lbs and i have plenty of room in it."

Great and fun car

"MPG 45-48 hwy, 31-36 city, combined approximately 38. Having bought this car out of necessity, I can now state that this was one of the best purchases that I have made. Being a Soldier stationed in Germany, I have found this car to be reliable and fun to drive. It has the power to keep up on the Autobahn and also the agility to be able to conquer the mountain roads in the area. This car lowers to the ground as its speed climbs over 100 mph eventually reaching 130 mph without a quivver. Handling is superb, even at high speeds. The only drawback that I have about this American built Focus is not in the vehicle itself but in the navigation system ....... being stationed in Europe, it would be great if a person could get the SD card with European maps on it. Ford dealers in the states say to check the Ford dealers here and here they tell you to go check with your original dealer. Who knows, maybe eventually they will get it right. If you're not going to Europe, then this is a fun and reliable car to drive."

"After driving a '06 Cobalt for well over a year, this car is a complete breath of fresh air! One of very few cars I was able to find in a manual transmission, it shifts very smooth, gets great mileage and overall is an amazing car. Absolutely in love with it, and would recommend it to friends and family."

"I have owned this car for some time now and have yet to have any problems with it. The dealer handled the recalls very quickly and explained the auto/standard transmission to me as I asked about the feeling when first accelerating. I have recomended this car to several friends and family. My brother bought one and three of my co-workers also bought them after I let them drive mine. They all love theirs too. I am getting 40.2 miles on the highway in an very comfortable comfortable drivers seat. I never have to adjust my seating position as I have with other cars. You also can not beat the standard features that you get in this car. Everyone is surprized when I tell them what was a standard features and what I paid extra for. I.E. Not much. Great car at a great price."
