"Our 309,000 mile Ford Explorer XLT is an amazing vehicle, basically trouble free, well-made, dependable. Change synthetic oil on schedule. This SUV keeps going and going.
Great workhorse. problem free. We previously owned another Ford Explorer XLTm a 1996, which we sold at 250,000 miles, and were very pleased with, to a mechanic who was elated to get it.... he knew three friends who had same vehicle, and with basic maintenance, still running at 450,000 miles! Well done, Ford!"
Pros: "Capability of the 4WD, comfort, durable body."
Cons: "Gas mileage, leaks and frequent repairs after 230K"

"I currently own 2 explorers. A 2000 and an 01 sport, I bought the 01 as my daily driver because the 2000 was starting to have engine knock and small leaks within the cooling system. Even after having the thermostat housing and hose replaced. I drove this truck for about 50,000 miles and it did well overall but started having issues around 225,000 or so and I must say I was impressed it's made it this far. I am currently keeping it for winter because it does great in snow and to occasionally keep the miles off of my 01 sport."
"Great vehical over all had some big repairs and such over the past 5 years!Motor and trans are the only things that havent been replaced! guzzels a bit of gas!will see ill never get my money back on it maybe ill hit 250,000 LOL."
"This car has lasted my family 15 years so far, and is still running strong. The only major repair we had to do was change the timing chains (which I'll admit was the biggest project we've ever done). We've run AMSOIL for the life of the vehicle, and the engine interior is near flawless. It handles very well in the snow, and is strong enough to pull our 25 foot camper. It rides a little rough on bumpy roads, the gas mileage is'nt the best, and the transmission is starting to wear, but after 15 years and 190,000 miles, its still going strong. I expect it to last me another few years. Overall, great vehicle."
"I picked up my new Explorer on May 15, 1995. It has been totally reliable with only occasional brake work required and a transmission replacement at 175,000 miles. I just put the forth set of new tires on it that now have less than 300 miles. Driving visibility is the best of any vehicle I've ever owned or driven. My grand nieces and nephew had driving lessons in this vehicle and prefer to drive it over much newer vehicles. I LOVED this car. Unfortunately, on May 22nd, my grand nephew was using the car for errands when a young man in a Chevy Yukon made a left turn directly in front of him. Because my grand nephew was going the speed limit (45 mph) the damage was significant. Both vehicles were totaled. I say all of this to point out that this remarkable, reliable vehicle, likely saved my grand nephew from severe injury or possible death. After 20 years of great service, the air bags deployed perfectly and he walked away without a scratch. I will desperately miss this vehicle because I kept it in tip top condition and I used it for delivering Meals on Wheels and many other activities for which my smaller, newer vehicle is not suited. Thank you Ford Motor Corporation for a great 20 years and for the health and safety of my grand nephew."
