2009 Ford Edge Review

By

By masterfully combining the best attributes of a responsive but comfortable sedan with those of a versatile and roomy SUV, the 2009 Ford Edge fulfills the promise of the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) like no other example to date. It also demonstrates impeccable timing, earning a spot as the nation best-selling crossover as many car-based CUV sales begin overtaking their truck-based SUV counterparts. The Ford Edge might not have the capability to impact the market in the same way as the automaker's Taurus sedan of 1986 or the Explorer SUV of 1991, but the fact that it's good enough to get mentioned in the same sentence as those milestones says quite a bit.

You'll Like This Car If...

Softer than some, stiffer than others, the 2009 Ford Edge hits the mass-appeal sweet spot in ride and handling. Coupled with a refined, eager powertrain and notably quiet highway cruising, the roomy, comfortable, versatile Edge is an extraordinarily well-rounded way to move throughout the world.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The Ford Edge doesn't corner as aggressively as its sporty appearance may suggest. Its innovative design (and $40,000 plus price ceiling) might also have you expecting the availability of features like keyless entry and start and a third-row seat. For the small percentage of drivers that would utilize it, the Edge's lack of manumatic shift capability could be a disappointment.

What's New for 2009

A new trim, the Edge Sport, joins the lineup for 2009. The Sport features available 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, an eight-piece factory installed body kit and special exterior paint choices.

Driving the Edge
Driving Impressions

In the city and on the highway, the 2009 Ford Edge met or exceeded nearly all of our high expectations. More significant than how quickly the Edge was able to...

... merge and pass was how pleasantly it did so, with none of the racket and drama we might have expected from such a vehicle only a few years ago. At cruising speeds, we were impressed by an appreciably quiet cabin and a notably comfortable ride. Only when the road began to wind and curve, and we began to push it harder, did the Edge reveal any noteworthy limitations, although we nonetheless consider the suspension, steering and brakes ideally balanced for the vehicle's purpose in life.

Available Remote Seatback Release
For loading larger items, the split rear seatback folds flat at the push of two cargo area-mounted buttons.

Available "Vista Roof" Glass Sunroof
Open or closed, the Edge's massive glass sunroof really livens up the passenger cabin. There's even a second, fixed glass panel over the second row.

2009 Ford Edge Details
2009 Ford Edge photo Interior

he Edge's more familiar interior styling doesn't quite live up to the expectations set by its cutting-edge sheetmetal, but it's nonetheless attractive, comfortable and spacious. Highlights include an especially roomy back seat with reclining seatbacks and a center console big enough to swallow a laptop or purse. Available niceties include the dual pane Vista Roof, remote seat release buttons that let you fold the rear seatbacks flat from the cargo area and a fold-flat front passenger seat that allows for the transport of items up to eight feet in length. New for 2009 is an ambient lighting package and available Blue Suede interior appearance package.

Exterior

By resisting the urge to add even a small, "just in case" third-row seat, Ford's designers were able to give the Edge the sleeker, sportier profile that helps set it apart from the crowd. The view from the side is marked by a large but subtle rear spoiler, short front and rear overhangs and well-defined wheel arches framing 17-inch aluminum wheels. The front of the vehicle is dominated by a version of the three-bar chrome grille that debuted on the Ford Fusion sedan, while the back is defined by dual exhaust outlets, a big, unapologetic Ford oval and clear-lens taillamps. Edge SEL and Limited models are distinguished by 18-inch wheels, front fog lights, chrome exhaust tips plus body-color mirrors, door handles and spoiler. The Sport rides on 20-inch rims with a massive 22-inch set available, a first in this segment.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

In addition to the 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission, a base Edge SE includes power windows/locks/mirrors, remote keyless entry, single-disc CD/CD-MP3 sound system, auxiliary audio input jack, reclining rear seatbacks and 17-inch aluminum wheels, A comprehensive set of standard safety equipment includes front, front-side and two-row side-curtain airbags, plus electronic stability control with rollover mitigation.

Optional Equipment

Features not included on a base Edge include the two-panel Vista Roof, EasyFold trunk-mounted remote rear-seat release, DVD-based voice activated navigation system, DVD rear-seat entertainment system, power rear liftgate, SYNC hands-free communication and entertainment system with 911 Assist, reverse sensing system, premium six-disc audio system, leather seating, power and heated front seats and fold-flat passenger seat.

Under the Hood

In addition to Ford's newest V6, the Edge's powertrain features a cutting-edge six-speed automatic transmission that's the product of a joint development program between Ford and GM. The available all-wheel-drive system functions in front-wheel-drive mode until a need for additional traction is detected. In true crossover fashion, the Edge is built upon the same platform as Ford's Fusion sedan. Maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds.

3.5-liter V6
265 horsepower @ 6250 rpm
250 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 (FWD), 15/22 (AWD)

Pros: "great price,"

Cons: "weird button set up on steering wheel"

"Bought this car recently used. Its incredibly well taken care of and aside from miles (under national average per year) its in excellent condition. It drives great and feels much like my full size sedan to handle (2006 Chevy Impala Police Package for those wondering). The gas tank is a bit smaller than I would of expected and the gas mileage is as expected for a vehicle this size - 20-22 mpg city, 26-28 highway. The dashboard has digital center. And the controls on the steering wheel are a bit odd. You'll get used to it but I personally don't like the control pads right where my thumbs normally sit. I've had to change the way I hold the wheel. Its a good height for someone 5'8" and heavyset."

"We purchased this 2007 Ford Edge SEL vehicle in 2009. It was just dropped off at the dealer and we were not seriously wanting to purchase a vehicle. But, when we saw a 2 year old vehicle with 4,500 miles, we jumped on the opportunity! Great room, comfort, and safety. The only major issue we had was with the transfer case. The vehicle would smell like natural gas when on an incline. The Ford dealer could never find the issue until the vehicle would hardly move, but had enough umph to make it to the Ford dealer again. Once a mechanic smelled the 'natural gas' smell he knew what to do, replace the transfer case. Being still under warranty, it was replaced free of charge. The Ford folks were very interested with this issue. Other than this issue, the electrical, mechanical, etc. has been good. The visibility is great with high riding. Vehicle never stranded us. Only regular maintenance has been required. We traded in on another vehicle and know the next owner will have a very good vehicle and hope they maintain it properly. Sad to trade in this vehicle, but we just had the itch for something smaller."

From NEW to 227K miles this vehicle is a great one to own!

"This vehicle looks small but is BIG in overall cabin and hatch area space. Handles great on the road and in each turn. Gas mileage is 21 - 23 on HWY and in town combined. I have 227K and still runs like it was just drove of the showroom!"

Pros: "Great on the road and manuvers nicely in town."

Cons: "20" low aspect tires make the ride stiffer."

"It may seem small on the outside compared to my former SUV, but it holds almost as much as my old Explorer and gets about 5 MPG better. Handles well and goes through the snow. I do miss sitting up high like the old SUV."

"This car comes with huge transmission problems that Ford will not back. On the freeway and with no warning the instrument warning light come on and the speedo goes to zero. come to a complete stop and the car will not move. Turn of the car and restart and after very rough shifting in to drive, the car will once again drive fine until the next episode which could be the next day or two. Lots of the same complains online with no where to turn to but sell the car for very little or take on huge repair bill from the dealer."
