"We bought this 1999 SE Sport in 2001 from dealer. It has been extremely reliable, only requiring (self-done) maintenance and a few age-related replacements (fuel pump, battery, alternator, power steering pump). The performancehas always been its best feature, handling being BMW-esque. It's like driving a go-kart: you know the power/acceleration aren't phenomenal but for the scale of vehicle, you begin to feel you could challenge a Ferrari! I've always found Ford seats to be comfortable and despite minimal padding to save space, these are survivable even on long journeys. It's biggest downside, though, is the ergonomics: cupholders too small and FORWARD of the gear-shift, no storage to speak of, center tray right under e-brake, minimalistic despite price, cramped engine bay. Still, the car has survived trans-California road-trips, daughter's college years and my neanderthal speed-shifting without issues. It's still on the original clutch! It out-does (out-DID) neighborhood 'rice-rockets' stock! I'm thinking of adding a turbo or converting to electric IF it ever dies!"
"My Dad purchased the car new in 1999. He took a lot of short and long road trips. I have owned it since 2005. This car has been to many states and was very reliable. It has been in the last 2 years that we have had to put money into fixing it."
Pros: "nice looking car, drives great, no fluid leaks"
Cons: "MONEY MONEY MONEY U SPEND"

"What more can I say, I should have sold it, but when you don't have finances to go into another car you keep supporting the one you have. MECHANICS SAY IT IS A NIGHTMARE TO WORK ON COMPARED TO TAURUS THE SAME YEAR."
Cons: "Boring design- which could be a good thing"

"I bought this car in 2000 from a ford dealer, it had about 15,000 miles at that time. it served as my commute car doing 80 miles daily til 2007 when i bought a new car. I gave this car to my niece who in turn passed to the next family member in need of a car... till this year 2015. it was given back to me because they thought it needed major repairs. Wrong! just a tune up and she's back on the road as my errands-round-town car.
The only downside I experienced was the timing belt would need replacing at 70K rather than the recommended 100K. Luckily its a non-interference motor so no major damage done. And the fuel pump went out (located in gas tank, grrr) but that was most likely my fault for running on "E" too often."
"From the moment my husband brought this car home it's been a headache already on its second transmission going on its third . This car is a piece of junk much like all Ford models. Haven't seen one yet that is reliable."
