2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Regular Cab Review

By

When it comes to heavy hauling, the domestic pickup fleet still has a lock on torque and towing ability, not to mention out-and-out ruggedness. If you're looking for a big truck with abilities equal to its imposing good looks, the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 are just the ticket. For 2007, Dodge's big Ram continues with its signature big-rig front, gains more interior room with the addition of the Mega Cab model and adds power with the availability of the new Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. Of course, if diesel isn't your thing, the standard HEMI engine delivers more than enough power, and bragging rights, for most customers.

You'll Like This Car If...

Want a pickup that's loaded with personality? The Rams are as big, bold and in-your-face as the people who like driving them. With a standard 345-horsepower HEMI V8, the Ram 2500 is one of the most powerful pickups in its class. When equipped with the Cummins Turbo Diesel, the Ram can tow up to 16,300 pounds.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The Ram is a big truck designed for heavy-duty work. If you like the idea of a big truck, but commute through the suburbs on a daily basis, you may want to try something a bit smaller, such as the V8-powered Dakota.

What's New for 2007

For 2007, a new 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel and six-speed automatic transmission make their debut. The Cummins Turbo Diesel is cleaner and quieter than the previous engine, and provides a whopping 650 pound-feet of torque.

Driving the Ram 3500 Regular Cab
Driving Impressions

With improved ride and handling qualities and more sedan-like interiors, today's three-quarter and full-ton pickup trucks are more livable than ever. Our Dodge Ram 3500...

... Mega Cab Laramie test vehicle - well equipped with a big Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, six-speed automatic transmission and optional dual rear wheels - was no exception.

The mini-monster's steering, brake and suspension systems combine to deliver a feeling of control that's reassuring in a vehicle this size. While its extreme load capacities require a sacrifice in ride quality that's most apparent on the highway - a condition amplified in our dually tester - even the biggest Ram pickup is comfortable enough for longer drives to the worksite.

Folding Armrest/Storage Unit
A wide folding armrest/storage unit is big enough to hold a laptop and comes complete with a 12-volt outlet.

New Interior
The Ram's new interior is every bit as plush as the new Ford F150, but is attached to a much more powerful platform.

Interior

The Ram's interior is clean and highly functional. The lines on the dash and door panels are straight and crisp, and the plastics used in their construction feel sturdy without appearing cheap. Seat comfort is excellent, as is interior storage. Unfortunately, the Quad Cab model features a rear bench seat that feels a bit upright and does not offer as much legroom as its competitors from Ford, Chevy and Nissan. Those seeking a big back seat need only look to the Mega Cab model.

Exterior

The aggressively-designed Ram exterior conveys a brutish, muscular appearance backed up by 17-inch wheels, towering ground clearance and a grille so big it needs its own ZIP Code. In dual-wheel form, the Ram 3500 almost looks like an 18-wheeler.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Both the Ram 2500 and 3500 ST versions come with a 5.7-liter V8, six-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with CD, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), 17-inch wheels, rear-bumper with step, keyless entry, vinyl 40/20/40 split bench seat and a tilt steering wheel.

Optional Equipment

Depending on trim, the options list is huge. The Ram can be ordered in 2500 or 3500 models with Regular, Quad or Mega Cabs, two- or four-wheel drive, two automatic transmissions (a four- and six-speed) and a choice of gasoline V8 or Cummins Turbo Diesel engines. Along the way, you can add leather seats, a GPS navigation radio, Infinity sound system, off-road package, trailer package, chrome wheels, power-adjustable pedals, limited-slip differential, power folding mirrors, fog lights, front side-impact airbags and a 34-gallon fuel tank.

Pros: "Good fuel milage, good handling, reliable"

Cons: "small back seat"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Bought new, after 25K miles of break in started getting 20 mpg, Super dependable and comfortable to drive. Use it as a commuter for business. Now at 150K miles I am getting 24 mpg highway and 16 city. Usually average 20 combined when I fill up. This is my best automotive investment ever. Only fault is that the back seats are not as comfortable as other trucks. Drove the others and this truck out handles them all. Upgrade to Bilstein shocks to fix the choppy ride and you've got a sport truck."

Pros: "Smooth ecomonic comfortable ride."

Cons: "Dash cracks. Must keep up with routine maintenance"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"This truck is virtually bulletproof and a true champion. However a few options are not listed. First being is side airbags. My vehicle magically has side airbags and is not listed. Second is the 3.92 rear end option provided in the sport package. Also not listed. Third is the limited slip option not listed and also not in the tech specs. Fourth is the sport package factory lowering kit. These options not being available will dramatically lower the value of the vehicle."

"This truck is so much fun to drive. I also have a ford lightning and it has a 4 speed automatic. The driving fun is hurt by the auto trans. Not in the ram though. The 6 speed manual lets you feel the power of the 505 ci v10 engine. Also the seats make you feel very secure when driving."

Pros: "durable, hard worker"

Cons: "weak front end parts & trans"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"I've owned this truck since 2004 when I was pregnant with my 2nd baby and we bought it used with about 30k on the odometer. We've been across country (east to west!) about 4 times with this old girl, she's never quit. We can even fit all 3 kids in the back seat with really no cramping. (who needs a minivan? haha) We used to haul a 14k 5th wheel 2-4 times a month no problem. We've just recently had to rebuild the trans in it for almost $5k but we've put a ton of miles on it! More torque/power than ford or Chevy. We have upgraded the front end steering which may finally resolve the constant ball joint change we had to keep doing on the passenger side. We do run a banks six gun package on it and she still likes to get up and play :) It's a bit more expensive to maintain because parts are so big/pricey but the Cummins is a great engine. I do wish they had put a heavier duty trans in it, the stock one is kind of puny."
