2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Review

By KBB.com Editors

The midsize 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SUV may be one of the older designs on the market, but its winning combination of size, power, interior room and price make it a force with which to be reckoned. The five-passenger TrailBlazer comes with a standard potent yet fuel-friendly in-line six-cylinder engine, and there's an optionally available 5.3-liter V8 that's perfectly suited for towing heavy loads. The TrailBlazer is also available as a high-performance version wearing the famous SS logo and packing a 390-horsepower, 6.0-liter V8 under its hood. A long list of optional equipment makes it easy to personalize the TrailBlazer, creating a rolling recreation room for the kids in a safe and stylish package both mom and dad can feel good about.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you need something bigger than an Equinox but not as massive as a Suburban, the 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer will probably fit well into your life (as well as your garage). It has good front- and rear-seat legroom, lots of headroom and a fair amount of cargo space.

You May Not Like This Car If...

You may not like the TrailBlazer if you're looking for car-like handling or need the convenience of a third-row seat.

What's Significant About This Car?

XM Satellite Radio and head-curtain side airbags are made standard.

Driving the TrailBlazer

Driving Impressions The standard engine is the powerhouse 4.2-liter in-line six. This amazing engine has the power of a small V8, delivering ample passing power at all speeds. If, however, more torque...

is required for towing, the 5.3-liter V8 is available. The TrailBlazer's steering wheel has a solid, firm feel to it, devoid of the floating disconnect inherent in so many power steering systems. You always have a good idea where the TrailBlazer is going, and its tight steering and double A-arm front suspension frees you from constantly making corrections to keep the vehicle from drifting out of its lane. A firm brake pedal brings the TrailBlazer to a quick stop every time, and the brakes show little fade after repeated use.
Favorite Features

4.2-Liter Six-Cylinder Engine
The standard 4.2-liter in-line six-cylinder engine offers more power than some V8s and commendably good fuel economy, as well.

Fuel-Saving V8
With Active Fuel Management, the 5.3-liter V8 runs on four cylinders when not under load. All eight cylinders come on-line nearly instantaneously once the accelerator is depressed.

2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Details
2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer photo Interior

The TrailBlazer's interior is typically Chevrolet: Simple and clean. The seating is firm and the dash and controls are handsomely adorned in wood trim and sturdy black plastic. Backlighting on the power window buttons and steering wheel-mounted controls are two excellent features often overlooked by many other manufacturers. Chevrolet offers some of the most sophisticated electronic toys on the market, including rear-seat DVD entertainment and OnStar telematics.

Exterior

The 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer's rugged yet refined pose seems as comfortable off-road as in the valet parking lot. Tall doors make it easy to get in without bumping your head, and there's enough glass to give the driver a nearly-uninterrupted view through 360 degrees. The Trailblazer SS trim gets jet black paint, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels and a lowered ride height.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer LT features dual-zone manual air conditioning, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), StabiliTrak electronic stability control, illuminated entry, power liftgate release, AM/FM stereo with CD, rear window wiper/washer, aluminum wheels, keyless entry, garage door opener, eight-way power driver's seat and a Driver Information Center. The SS trim adds a 6.0-liter V8, larger brakes, performance suspension, 20-inch wheels and SS logo badging.

Optional Equipment

Options for the TrailBlazer include four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive (SS), a 5.3-liter V8, power sunroof, rear DVD entertainment system, limited-slip rear differential, touch-screen navigation radio and power-adjustable foot pedals.

Under the Hood

The 4.2-liter in-line six is terrific, unless you're towing something really big. The 5.3-liter V8 is an excellent option for those who need more power. Its Active Fuel Management technology helps out with highway fuel economy. For those eager for a high-performance SUV, the SS version, complete with 6.0-liter V8, is the clear choice.

Pros: "Safety, comfort, power, and cargo/towing capacity."

Cons: "Mediocre gas mileage."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Comfortable and capable! It drives as comfotably as most cars. The long wheel base and big tires take potholes without trouble. Snow and rain are no problem. In bad weather I shift to automatic 4WD and the vehicle shifts into 4WD when needed. I wish they still made them. I am taking care of this one because I want to keep it for a long time."

Pros: "FUN TO DRIVE AND THE NICE LOOK ON THE TOWN"

Cons: "REAR CUP HOLDERS ARE GROUND LEVEL, Gas milage"

"Once you own a Chevy Trailblazer you want NOTHING ELSE to drive in your life. It handles just like a car, no wide turns necessary. We had some major storms in the North East and every time and I MEAN EVERTIME the trailblazer has surprised me. It cuts through the snow like butter with traction control. Smaller SUV/Crossovers’ slip and slide in rain, Not the Trailblazer. The Driving Dynamics is crazy, it does more than holds the road; it grabs the road. It's dependable and reliable. If your tall like me (6'0) heaven. There enough room for you, four more people and your cargo. My wife has Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) which means I need to put a full-size scooter in and out of the truck. That’s how much room I have. I brought my first Trailblazer in 2001 and my second in 2006! Tell me I’m not a fan. My only complaint they stop making them AND pretending Transverse is the same truck."

Pros: "Everything about the LTZ!"

Cons: "That they dont make the trailblazer any longer!"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I bought my trailblazer used and it was the best decision I ever made. Aside from basic car repairs it has never let me down. It is comfortable to drive, all the controls are within easy reach, it holds a ton of of my stuff. I have hauled everything from people to wood. The fold down seats give me even more room. I have looked at other vehicles to compare it to and it would cost me close to $40k to get what I have in this. Tilt, cruise, dual power seats, heated mirrors, heated seats, lumbar support for driver and passenger, rear air and heat. We loved this one so much we bought a second one!"

Pros: "Quick, reliable, safe, tough, kid friendly"

Cons: "Interior-not so fancy, typical SUV gas mileage"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Love love this SUV for toting around my kids and making the 30 mile trip into work everyday. Very safe, reliable, and have NEVER had any mechanical problems with it. Despite it being a SUV, it is light and quick- which makes traveling fast paced freeways a breeze. I never have to worry about cutting anyone off or being the 'slow poke' because the V8 keeps me going when I need to. Love the rear AC/Heat for the kids and it does great on roadtrips. Have taken it camping and it does great off road as well as towing/hauling (trailer with 3 ATV's, +5 passengers and cargo and it did great) When I first bought this I hated giving up my zippy cool looking coup, but after 3 years I wouldn't go back to an unsafe little car ever again. Perfect family vehicle for those who want to avoid being stuck in an overpriced, wimpy minivan. And you have to love the pricetag- very affordable. Rock the TB and you will love it!"
