"bought in 1999, soon turned into a money pit. Had to replace engine gaskets which cost a fortune in labor. Brake lines rusted out. ABS went out years ago and not worth the cost to get fixed. Rear view mirror fell off several times. A/c went out and hasn't been the same since. Radiator went out recently, alternator not long before that. One window won't work. I expect thing to happen as a car gets older but not this much."

Pros: "Comfort, reliability, look, storage"

Cons: "Rusts below gas cap"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I got my Monte Carlo in 2006, used, with about 160,000 miles on it. Been driving it ever since and recently crossed the 230,000 mile mark. I replaced all 6 fuel injectors, the motors in both windows, and the starter. Obviously put new tires on in that time as well. It rides great and consistently gets between 20-28 MPG. A few "quirks" developed as the miles added up: using the blinkers turns off cruise control, the cruise only works when it feels like it, sometimes the windows won't roll up for a few minutes, you can't have the blinkers on and roll up the windows, etc. Nothing major but can be annoying. Esepecially in the middle of winter. Lately the air conditioning has been wonky when starting - it squeals until the systemis full of air (there's a leak somewhere) and then it cuts out when going uphill. Also not the end of the world. I have babied my car and changed the oil every 2500 miles, but it still runs pretty good so it's been worth it. The only major gripe I have is the design flaw with all these models and the Lumina (which has the same body)- they all rust below the gas cap after awhile. Mine was slowly rusting but this winter in MN was not good for it and I'm going to try to fix it myself since body work is so expensive. Overall, I've loved my Monte Carlo for the 8 years and ~70,00 miles I've driven it. I wish they still made them so I could upgrade to a newer model, but they don't. I never worried about it breaking down in the middle of nowhere on me; it might have its flaws now but I trust it :)"

His name is Monte..real original.

"I have a 98 Monte Carlo Z34 that I traded an almost new 99 Cavalier for. Got it with 26,000 miles on it and it now has over 250,000. Top of engine rebuilt, and still driving it. Transmission slips a bit in overdrive, but the rest are good. Drive it everywhere still. Paint starting to peel. Has been a great car. Totally comfortable, roomy. I still love it. Plan to keep it till it dies. Sincerely, Becca"

"This is a great first car. Now with that said it is nothing more than that.nothing to special with this car. It is fun to drive and listen to the engine purr through the stock dual tips. I did not have this problem but supposed they have a bad alternator belt but mine is fine. Don't be fooled by other peoples opinions. This is a great first car, doing some research before I bought it people said that it had 16mpg I can get 20 out of it driving aggressively and 23 to 24 driving conservatively. Now since I am 16 I have hit some things; this car is super tough, I accidentally rear ended one of my buddies( who has a ford explorer) because I thought he went so I went. Anyway the only damage I got was my headlight tilted up and a couple of paint marks with a small dent that I didn't notice at first. Now he got a pretty big dent in his rear bumper. The headlight bent back into place and I haven't tried to get the paint off because it is 15 degrees where I live. Also owning this car I had to replace rear brakes and rotors all together they cost just over $100 when my moms Buick Teraza cost just under $200. This is a great first car"

Pros: "smooth ride fun to drive 24mpg and beautiful look."

Cons: "heavy doors, fairly wide turns."

"i have been driving this car for about 4 years and its been in my parent's possession for nearly 8 years. i love the way it drives and how smooth it is but this is a longer car so it cant turn very sharp. this car is generally very reliable other than a few issues such as; broken ac compressor, malfunctioning rev limiter(when in park it cuts out at 4k rpm), and a bad window motor. this does not include the issues the previous owner may have had (which i belive were very few if any)"
