"Being the third Metro I've owned, I've expected about the same from it as I've gotten from the past Metros. These are decently reliable vehicles. Minor faults there aren't many, but there are a few major faults with these vehicles.
Firstly, the body at the control arms rust out and cause problems; control arms breaking free at large bumps. This is definitely something to watch for in the future for purchasing. Always check at these points before purchase.
The G10 engine (1.0 liter 3-cylinder) tends to burn exhaust valves, and more often than not cylinder 3 exhaust valve. This is caused by oil changes that have gone on too long and bad exhaust system; leaks, no muffler, missing pieces.
Minor problems include bad synchros from 2nd-3rd when downshifting as owners do not know how to rev-match when going to a lower gear.
Rear wheel wells tend to rust out as well along with the spare tire bowl.
Blower motor speed switch tends to break, however, this can be remedied with a zip tie around the switch or installing an aftermarket switch.
Fuel gauge and speedometer gauge can read improperly.
Dash lights may not work due to faulty instrument panel dimmer switch. This can be fixed by jumping a power wire to the ground wire. (You will lose your capability to adjust brightness, but will regain your instrument cluster lights.)
I purchased a 1998 Chevrolet Metro with the 5 speed. When I looked at it I noticed a fair amount of rust at the control arms, and the engine had quite a knocking to it (connecting rod bearing 2). The oil pan leaked, but not too badly, and exhaust was very loud due to being rigged up.
I drove the vehicle like that for 5 months. It's still going. I have, however, done all the maintenance myself, save for a pipe welded up from the catalytic converter back.
I've done rear breaks (drums, shoes, hardware), wheel bearings, connecting rod bearings, oil pan, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, coolant temperature sensor, cooling fan switch, all fluids changed besides brake fluid, thermostat, alternator belt, battery, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and general lubrication. Most of the fixes have been preventative maintenance that was neglected by the previous owner. Vehicle has been exceptionally reliable, will always start, will always get me from point A to B even with 60 Psi of pressure in cylinder 3. If you can pick one up for $250, put $300 into it, you will have yourself a great running vehicle for years to come."
