For 2011, Chevrolet adds its fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission with TAPshift manual shift control to all Malibu trims.
Chevy's mid-size Malibu, like most GM passenger cars, suffered corporate neglect in the 1990s and early 2000s as customers---and the company's engineering attention and budget---increasingly shifted toward trucks and SUVs. Still, the plain-looking previous Malibu has drawn kudos as a solid, reliable, high-value contender and has sold fairly well. This new one, though, vaults Chevrolet straight to the top of the mid-size sedan game. It looks wonderful, is solidly built and carefully crafted inside and out, offers good fuel economy, drives wonderfully and is priced to sell in serious volumes. There is even an affordable "mild" hybrid version that performs better than the base four-cylinder car and gets two miles-per-gallon better economy.

"Bought the car new in November of 2007 - Black with Ebony/Brick interior. Looks good and drives good. I have never been as completely satisfied with a car as I have been with this one. I usually like to trade every couple of years, but am too attached to this one to even consider trading."

"Rob-Bob must be a very aggressive driver. I'm seeing a solid 32-34 MPG at 70-75 MPH. Combined city/hwy driving is around 27 MPG. I got the "custom" cocoa/cashmere interior and was so happy with the increased interior aesthetic. Mocha Steel Metallic paint absolutely sings in full sun and still looks great in the shade. Performance gets a "4" because hey, it's a four cylinder. Not much to complain about with it since it has plenty of power for highway merging and passing. Just nothing super impressive there. Comfort only gets a "4" because for me the headrests tilt too far forward."

"The Malibu, like other new-generation American cars (e.g., Ford Fusion) is a very nice automobile. Great styling and comfort, very good fit and finish, and handles well. Although I don't give it a high rating for performance because it's not a performance car, it does have great performance in terms of the job it's designed for. I got this car after four years in a Honda Civic hybrid (great car) and I am thrilled with it. It has returned 31.03 mpg overall for the first 14,700 miles, with a best of 35.1 and a worst of 27.3. That average is for all my driving (like idling in the driveway, slogging through 6" of snow, etc.) and not just cherry-picking (200 miles downhill with a tailwind). It's a mild hybrid, and the hybrid operation is seamless. Found it to be an excellent winter car with four studless snow tires installed."
