The 2014 Equinox is Chevrolet's torchbearer in the compact-crossover-SUV segment, where it competes with popular rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4. Like those others, the Equinox seats five passengers across two rows, but the Chevy is substantially larger than its competitors. Even with its size advantage, the Equinox trails in cargo space yet partly makes up for that with a spacious rear seat. The Equinox isn't very exciting to drive, but it does boast quiet, comfortable road manners. It is also one of the few remaining smaller crossover SUVs to offer a V6 engine, which allows the Equinox to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Fuel-conscious buyers will be more interested in the 4-cylinder version, which claims up to 32 mpg.
If want a comfortable family/gear hauler that's larger than other compact crossover SUVs but small enough to be at ease in parking lots, the Equinox is worth a look. For those who need to pull moderate loads, the 3,500-pound towing capacity in V6 models is shoulders above most competitors.
If you need to carry more than 5 passengers, look to a 3-row SUV like the Toyota Highlander, Kia Sorento, or the Equinox's bigger brother, the Traverse. Buyers aiming to spend less than the Equinox's $25,000 starting price can save thousands with lower-cost rivals like the Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester.
What's New for 2014
After receiving a more powerful V6 option and new safety features last year, few changes have been made to the 2014 Equinox except for new exterior color choices and the chrome-clad wheels now being offered as standard on high-end LTZ models.
Driving Impressions Behind the wheel, the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is rather ho-hum. Even with the more powerful V6 option, Chevy's crossover SUV doesn't feel as athletic as a Ford Escape using a...
smaller, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Some of this is simply physics. With that bigger engine, the Equinox tips the scales at nearly two tons, while 4-cylinder variants aren't much less. Models using that smaller engine deliver good fuel economy, but sacrifice even more performance for the sake of it. All 2014 Equinox models use a 6-speed automatic transmission – it works well with both engines. The Equinox doesn't feel particularly spry on twisty roads like a Mazda CX-5, which enjoys a fun romp every now and then. However, if there's an area where the Equinox shines, it's this SUV's comfortable and quiet highway ride. In this regard, the Chevrolet feels like a more expensive vehicle.ADJUSTABLE POWER LIFTGATE
Optional on 2LT models and standard in the top-line LTZ trim, this handy feature saves you the hassle of manually opening and closing the rear hatch door. The adjustable height setting, meanwhile, can save the door from hitting whatever resides above.
REAR-SEAT LEGROOM
With 39.9 inches of legroom and a back seat that slides, the 2014 Equinox has plenty of space for passengers to stretch out. This added room can also benefit harried parents maneuvering to secure a child seat.
Interior
The Equinox's cabin is comfortable and versatile, but despite this SUV's boxy design, it doesn't make the best use of space for cargo. The Honda CR-V, for example, is nearly 10 inches shorter in length, yet boasts roughly six more cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat. Thankfully, accommodations for human cargo are much better. The Equinox features well-bolstered seats, front and back, with lots of legroom for all. Dash materials and the Equinox's instrument cluster are attractive, especially in models with the 7-inch color screen and 2-tone surfaces. Corresponding buttons and dials are rather small and numerous, though.
Exterior
At over 187 inches, the Chevy Equinox is substantially longer than other compact SUVs. In fact, at this length, it's larger than a Ford Edge and the 3-row Kia Sorento, which usually fall into the midsize-SUV category. Yet the Equinox's proportions are well-balanced, and its sheet metal is attractive with a blend of soft curves that help counter the vehicle's rectangular shape. The 2014 Equinox comes off as athletic, but not as brawny as its GMC sibling, the Terrain. Higher-end models feature body-colored mirrors and roof rails. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard, with 18-inch and 19-inch versions available.
All 2014 Equinox models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, cruise control, a 6-month trial of GM's OnStar service, and safety features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and multiple airbags, including those for rear outboard passengers. Base LS models have an AM/FM/CD/satellite radio with a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity. LT models add amenities such as an 8-way power driver's seat, automatic climate control, rear-vision camera, and Chevy's MyLink radio with a 7-inch touchscreen. Top-line LTZ models come with leather seats, a power front passenger seat, a power tailgate, lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert.
All Equinox models are available with all-wheel drive (AWD) instead of the standard front-wheel drive (FWD), and LT and LTZ models can be had with the more-powerful V6 engine in lieu of the 4-cylinder. Options are scant for base LS models, but the list grows for LT and LTZ trims and includes navigation, Pioneer premium audio, and a power sunroof. A rear-seat entertainment package with DVD player with dual screens and two wireless headphones can help keep the kids occupied. Those seeking to add bling to the outside can opt for the Chrome package that adds plenty of it.
The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox's base engine is a 4-cylinder that is fuel efficient but outputs a just-adequate 182 horsepower. The improved V6 that arrived last year is optional and, with 301 horsepower, it does a better job of getting the Equinox's heft up to speed. Both engines are connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission and run on regular unleaded or E85 ethanol. The V6 engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, while the 4-cylinder is limited to 1,500. Front-wheel drive is the standard setup for both engines, and all-wheel drive is optional with either for drivers needing enhanced traction on slippery roads.
2.4-liter inline-4
182 horsepower @ 6,700 rpm
172 lb-ft of torque @ 4,900 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/32 mpg (FWD), 20/29 mpg (AWD)
3.6-liter V6
301 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm
272 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 mpg (FWD), 16/23 mpg (AWD)
Like its size, the Chevrolet Equinox's price tag is a bit larger than most of its rivals. A 2014 Equinox has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just over $25,000 for a base LS model. Midrange 1LT and 2LT trims are a few thousand beyond that, and the top-line LTZ starts over $32,000 and can reach several thousand more with options. In comparison, the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape have starting prices slightly below that of the Equinox, while the Kia Sportage starts under $20,000. To make sure you're getting the best deal, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price below. In terms of resale value, the Equinox is expected to hold up well against most rivals, but below the strong residual values of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage.

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 10,000
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "Great quality, excellent performance & comfort"
Cons: "None. The car has been flawless for 10,000 miles"

"I own a 2013 LTZ with the V6 engine. I have driven the car for 10,000 miles and only been back to the dealer for a free oil change. The car is attractive, fast, very quiet, very comfortable, handles great and has superb brakes. The leather seats are really nice and the interior has nice quality materials everywhere. This car does exactly what Chevrolet advertrises. I just returned from a trip and got 27 MPG while driving 89 MPH. I have gotten 32.4 MPG when driving slower. The new 301 horsepower V6 in the 2013 is a big improvement over the lower powered 3.o in earlier years. This car has the same powertrain as the small Cadillac SUV. I have read some other reviews that complained about the car. I notied most of them were for earlier models. I can attest to the quality and reliabilty of the 2013 model. I am very impressed with the quality and how plesant this car is to drive.I definately recommend it to anyone who wants a quality mid-size SUV that has good performance, good fuel economy and is very comfortable and quiet. A really nice car!"

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 70,000
overall rating 3 of 10rating detailsPros: "Great exterior look, good feel inside"
Cons: "not reliable, poor customer service"

"I bought the 2.4L 2010 Equinox in AWD brand new in 2010. It drove fine for the first 30,000 miles. After that my car began to leak fuel into my oil. My local dealer replaced my fuel pump. The problem persisted. I found out about a recall on my engine, fuel-pump and other various parts. My engine has since been rebuilt, the fuel pump replaced again, and my stablitrack repaired, but the engine noise and oil burning have not stopped. From what I have heard from others with this exact vehicle it is an ongoing issue and chevrolet customer service has not been very helpful in my experience. I am sorry to say I would not reccommend this vehicle if you get the 4 cylinder engine. It is a shame since the overall look of the vehicle is great and I was very impressed with the interior. It is very spacious. The fold down seats were also a big selling point for me as was the OnStar service."

"I'm over 6 feet tall and I'm comfortable in this medium size suv. I can stretch my legs out. And the cruze control is great on the road in midwest. Rides great, great price and I'm enjoying it daily. Have been in over 7 states in 3 years and drove from east coast to midwest on 1 tank of gas. Great gas mileage too."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 700
overall rating 3 of 10rating detailsPros: "Nice interior for the price, attractive exterior"
Cons: "no power, poor gas mileage, poor visibility"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 1
"I foolishly purchased the V4 model hoping to get the advertised gas mileage. If I had known just how optimistic those estimations were I would have opted for the V6 model, or a different car all together. Not only does the V4 provide extremely underwhelming power (Can't make it up hills or accelerate on the highway without sounding like the motor is going to explode), but i'm only riding at about 17mpg street and 19 mpg hwy. While I do tend to have a heavy foot, my 2000 V6 Mercury Sable was getting about 27 MPG on the street. Encountering hills makes me nervous because the Engine has to hit upwards of 6000 RPMs to make it up the tiniest of hills in Los Angeles to maintain a consistent speed. Overall I would probably be happy with the vehicle had I bought a v6, but for me the v4 has the power of a go-cart while guzzling gas like a V8. This scenario has left me nitpicking over everything in the vehicle until now I hate seeing it the driveway and paying the bill every month. I've actually sent letters to GM and plan to file a claim with the BBB for their deceptive advertising. Unless you plan on taking 3 minutes to go from 0 - 30 mph you won't see anything in the vicinity of the advertised mileage. In the end it was my fault for not thoroughly test driving the vehicle. I road it on flat ground for about 20 minutes, I should have rented one for a week and then I would have known just how under powered the motor is and how much of a lie the EPA's mileage estimates are."

overall rating 9 of 10rating detailsPros: "Practical design in and out, drives extremely well"
Cons: "No air vents in the back"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10
"I couldn't be happier with this vehicle. The interior design is very practical with a deep center console, adjustable back seats with a tremendous amount of room. It drives and handles fantastic in all types of weather, heavy snow, rain or high winds. My ONLY complaint is no air vents in the back seat. All in all, I'd buy this car over again. We are currently in the market for a vehicle for my husband and he can't seem to find a vehicle he likes more than the equinox.....something tells me we might end up owning two..."
