"I bought a '92 Corsica in 2007 that had ~155K miles on it for $500. The car was bought new by my friends dad and went through him and 2 of his sons before I got it after it had been sitting in the yard for a few months. The power steering was shot and it didn't have reverse or AC, but it ran like a champ (forward, at least). I beat the mess out of that car, as everyone tends to do with their first, but it never let me down. The only thing I ever had to replace in the ~40k I put on her aside from brakes/tires/battery were the brake lines which busted when some old lady slammed to a stop in front of me. The lines were dried out and busted open, but it was a cheap fix. It had a 4-banger in it which was great for gas mileage, but not as great for passing people on the highway. Cosmetic problems included a cracked, dry rotted dash on the passenger side and chipping paint. It seems like the white paint used on those models didn't hold up very well as I've seen several in similar condition, but the darker paints have held up well.
I lost the car due to some unfortunate circumstances but I fully believe it would still be running to this day if I hadn't. I'm so confident about that, in fact, that I plan on buying another one ('95 model) next week if all goes well.
If you're considering buying a first car for yourself or your teenager, I highly recommend a Corsica. Every one I've seen just refuses to die, and with regular maintenance will easily outlast 200,000 miles."
