"Had this car for about 4 years and about 30k miles (60k-~-90k) before it was rear ended by a truck which totaled it.
1) failed temp sensor
2) falied water pump
3) stuck open thermostat. I think all three of these were due to one issue but it all happened in the span of about a year a half. I just gave up and blamed it on DexCool
4) collapsed cat
5) weird intermittent electrical failures (would just loose all electronics and car would die, start it back up and it was fine)
6) had to replace two alternators
7) intake gasket leak"
Pros: "Basic sedan with lots of replacement parts."

"We bought this in 2004 brand new. It takes a beating in the New England winters but hardly any rust over all. Put a new Catalytic Converter on at 145,000 miles due to a clog. Most maintence I do myself per the Manufactures suggestions. I have switched to all synthetic oils and fluids at 100,000 miles still runs the same. I have had very few issues with this car and I do love the style and minimal computer controls so I can buy OEM parts from Amazon and replace them myself. I must say for the money spent, over 12 years I have enjoyed more comfortable safe driving than I have spent on loan and repairs. I have made a few upgrades by pulling from the large amount of this model found in junk yards around my area. Power seat upgrade, replace rug, replace interior roof liner replacement warn parts like power window units all from Junk yard."
"I purchased this car new in 1997 and the car has been excellent. I keep up my maintenance and have had no problems with my engine and no leaks of course I have had to replace the water pump and timing once. The car is still running smoothly my biggest issue has been with the anti theft light blinking and if the battery dies the gas hand has to be reset. I am confident that the car will get over 300K miles. I want another vehicle but I don't want to stop driving my malibu which is my work vehicle because I also own a 2005 chevy trailblazer which is great also. My next vehicle will be another Malibu."
"Pushing toward 250,000 miles, with minimal problems. One repair job at any given time much cheaper than regular monthly payments on a new car. I get 23-25 mpg city, 31-32 mpg Interstate.
Hey< I have 4 wheels and a steering wheel, and I can do the same thing as most newer cars, with far less potential technological problems - do some of the work myself, use the best oil. I'm on limited income, and God just keeps me going!"
