Pros: "runs well, decent mileage, and comfortable to use"

Cons: "unreliable gaskit due to bad engineering by GM"

"I got this car used many years ago for a good price. It had proven reliable until I reached around 175k miles then I started having some problem. Nearly all of the problem were caused by bad gaskit that allowed coolant and oil to mix together. This is unfortunately a known issue caused by using Dexcool and cheap plastic gaskit by GM. If your car (or considering one) and has less than 150k miles, do consider having both upper and lower gaskit replaced before it fails. Use quality 3rd party kit that is mostly metal and not plastic. Expensive problem to fix even if it was caught before the mixed fluid damaged the engine. The top gaskit plus labor can run around $800 to $1200 but you can do it yourself for about 6-8 hours of work and at most a couple hundred dollars. My car finally blew out at about 220k miles, and it was likely caused by broken gaskit that permanently damaged the parts. Final car mileage: about 23 MPG highway average"

"Same problems as everyone else. Bought at dealer for $3500 w/102000 miles. Within a month had problems with AC (controls on 3-4-5; not 1 or 2), turn signals, headlamp. The biggest problem was that the engine would shut off after driving for 30+ miles. Lot's of fun when this happened on busy highways. Took back to dealer who told me $1400 to fix 2 leaks and bad head gasket. Got $2000 for trade-in on it. Owned for 6 months."

"I purchased a 1998 Malibu 4 cylinder new. I did have some of the problems that I have read looking back over the years. I do love my car which has almost 179000 miles on it. For those who have the Anti Theft problem where the car won't start I also had that problem and took it to the dealer many times while the light was on and the car was running and they couldn't find anything wrong but the last time they actually disconnected the wiring and I never had a problem again. The only drawback is the anti theft light remains on. The other problem which I had that others have complained about is the antifreeze leaking. My mechanic found a water outlet housing that was corroded which was a very small plastic part. Another problem was the temp. running hot. It needed something called a H valve. I also had to replace the exhaust system and the thermostat twice. I do believe most of the problems have been with the cooling system which my mechanic says this car and most GM cars do have. Most of the repairs have occurred when the car was over 120000 miles except the Anti theft deterrent. One of the things that I made sure of was to do regular maintenance. Oil changes on a regular basis rotate tires and replace when needed. Needless to say, I still do have my car and she (Molly) is still going strong after 11 yrs. I am thinking of investing in another Malibu with low miles and hope to get as many years from it as I have from Molly. I would love to invest in a new car but with times as they are I think I will go with used. Thank you all for your reviews and I hope my review will help those who did have the same problems that I have had in the past. P.S. I also am having a rust problem below the gas cap. Has anyone done any repairs for that and if so what did you do?"
