I own this car - My approximate mileage is 218,656
overall rating 8 of 10rating detailsPros: "Holds up well, fun to drive, cheap to operate"
Cons: "Interior falls apart, V6 engine has design flaws."
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8
"First and foremost, it is styled like a sports car, however, the base model Beretta is NOT a sports car! If you are looking for a sports car experience from a small 2 door coupe, Beretta GT/GTU/Z26 is the ideal car for you! Bought the car brand new at a price of $16,500 and it has been an overall excellent car for the price. Pros: Interior redesign from the 1980's model is much improved. Large knobs for headlights and wipers are easy to reach and control, even with little or no light. Knurled grips on the knobs, and turn signal lever are a nice touch. 4 way manual seat assures total driver comfort. All controls are within reach of the driver and are easy to locate and use without taking your eyes off the road. The exterior design never changed since 1987, and this is a good thing. Rear disc brakes would have been a nice addition to improve stopping distance. Brake wear is horrible with a poorly designed brake system that was carried over from its smaller sibling, the Cavalier. Brakes are seriously undersized for a car with a V6 engine. Steering is good, but not sporty. The car handles more like an economy car than a sports car. There is alot of body roll in turns, and the lack of independant rear suspension adds to the poor handling. Engine performance is good. 165hp V6 engine has plenty of power for acceleration and passing on the highway. The engine has many design flaws that really add to the general upkeep costs of the car. It has a very poor intake design that requires new gaskets every 60-80k miles. Most general upkeep items on the car are easy to do such as oil changes and air filter. More advanced repairs can be more difficult, almost nightmarish because of the very large engine in the small car. Transmission is largely reliable with regular fluid changes. Electrical issues are the biggest repairs to the transmission to date. My transmission has never been rebuilt, however, I change the fluid every 20,000 miles. Car holds up well. No rust issues. The exterior of the car holds up very well over time. Interior does not hold up very well. Dashboard warps and separates, seat belts tear up the front seat bolsters from use, and the back seat tears at the top because of the sun beating on it. There is alot of very low quality materials in the interior. Overall, it has been a very good car. It was a very innovative idea in 1987 when it first came out, and I hope that GM will make a similar car in the future. I have held onto it over the years because I can't find anything that compares to it. I have difficulties with 4 door cars getting in and out of them, making the Beretta an excellent choice with its very large doors!"
